June 2015 ~ Nearly Irish?
http://nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Monday, 29 June 2015. On Monday, June 29, 2015. Sometimes I think too much. Way too much. After so many years living here, there are still some puzzling questions about the Irish way of life going through my mind now and again. Not important ones, like trying to understand the ins and outs of the Irish tax system, but rather small cultural differences that I still don't have an answer for (and Wikipedia neither in some cases). Why are pillows square in France but rectangular in Ireland? Why are there shu...

Things Irish people say but don't mean ~ Nearly Irish?
http://nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2014/02/things-irish-people-say-but-dont-mean.html
Friday, 14 February 2014. Things Irish people say but don't mean. On Friday, February 14, 2014. When I came to Ireland I had to get used to the way Irish people talked. It wasn't so much what they said, but more what they meant that I didn't always understand. Here a few examples:. The truth is, Irish people don't really want to know how you are doing. It's just politeness. They don't wait for an answer. Sometimes they ask "How are you? Not too bad / Grand / Not a bother. See you later / See you after.

Memories of Bastille Day ~ Nearly Irish?
http://nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2015/07/memories-of-bastille-day.html
Wednesday, 15 July 2015. Memories of Bastille Day. On Wednesday, July 15, 2015. A good few years ago in the French embassy for Bastille Day. Back in Brittany, the 14th of July falls around the same time as a traditional festival taking place in my town, so we usually celebrate our local culture more than the French revolution, and this means I have celebrated Bastille Day a lot more in Ireland than in France. The atmosphere was electric, everybody was dancing to the beats of the DJ, and I have never seen...

A taste of the future ~ Nearly Irish?
http://nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-taste-of-future.html
Sunday, 19 July 2015. A taste of the future. On Sunday, July 19, 2015. Doing nothing on holidays is easy.Doing nothing at home is scary! Yesterday we got a taste of what life could look like when we retire (or at least when the kids leave the house). And it wasn't pretty. The first few days back were easy. It was mid-week, we were both working and the routine didn't change too much. Except I slept half an hour more every morning and didn't have to take care of anyone else but me. Pure bliss. Then my husb...

How much information are you willing to make public? ~ Nearly Irish?
http://nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2015/07/how-much-information-are-you-willing-to.html
Thursday, 23 July 2015. How much information are you willing to make public? On Thursday, July 23, 2015. I'm doing some recruiting at work at the moment and it must be my curious nature but every time I receive an application, my first step after going through the CV and cover letter is to check the applicant social media profiles. I often wondered if employers looked me up on Google when I was looking for a job. Did they find my blog? Did they read it? In my case, I would say I'm careful about what I pu...

May 2015 ~ Nearly Irish?
http://nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, 21 May 2015. The referendum and why I'm not allowed to vote. On Thursday, May 21, 2015. In case you are living on another planet (or maybe just in another country), tomorrow is the referendum about gay marriage (and also about lowering the age of presidential candidates but no one seem to really care about that one). In fact, even if I obtain citizenship, will people consider me Irish? Will I even consider myself Irish? I'm not quite sure. So go and vote YES! Tuesday, 19 May 2015. I wonder why ...

March 2015 ~ Nearly Irish?
http://nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 31 March 2015. On Tuesday, March 31, 2015. My aunt "Tata Titine" in the traditional costume around 1940. My aunt passed away at the week-end. In a way it was expected. She was 92 and for the past few years had been in a retirement home. She was more like a grandmother to me, and I have very fond memories of her. She had a strong personality, was very opinionated. and also quite stubborn (a very common trait amongst Breton people! At what point do you decide you have to go home? But I couldn't be...

August 2015 ~ Nearly Irish?
http://nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Friday, 28 August 2015. 6 things I miss from France. On Friday, August 28, 2015. Let's be clear, I can definitely live without baguettes or croissants. I can also manage without French cheese or shutters (. Even if I complain about them quite a lot. Sometimes I even prefer an Irish breakfast to a French one and I've started drinking tea instead of coffee. But once and again, I feel a bit nostalgic and wish for things that I can't have here in Ireland. Being able to bring cheap wine back to Ireland. I...
