Wednesday, October 30, 2013. 2013 Silage Harvest: DONE. Our 2013 fall silage harvest is officially complete! We'll celebrate this accomplishment by having a full work schedule through the end of the week, tend to our regular milking/feeding chores over the weekend, and then start drilling next Spring's wheat and ryegrass crops into the ground come next week. We are now feeding our cows corn silage from the first pit we filled. Links to this post. Friday, October 18, 2013. Links to this post. 8221; but in...

Sunday, June 21, 2015. Lessons learned from my Dad. My sister and I were blessed to grow up in a Christian home with a mom and dad that loved us and were (and remain) engaged in our lives. And since today is Fathers Day, I thought I would share with you a few of the many lessons I've learned from my dad over the years. Dad taught me how to play sports. Or perhaps more importantly, he taught me how to make time for my kids even at the end of a long work day. Dad taught me the value of good conversation.

Monday, September 30, 2013. 2013 Silage Harvest: Week 5 Recap. Ten more "full" days of chopping should see us finish our harvest, but those ten days could easily be spread over three weeks. We had intended on moving into our bottomland this morning, but over an inch of rain quickly washed that thought way. Most likely we'll chop next to the dairy for the next two days and move to the creek bottom on Thursday.IF it doesn't rain anymore. Chopping sorghum on a cloudy morning. Links to this post. The Dairyman's Blog: My Farming Forefathers
http://blog.gilmerdairyfarm.com/2009/06/my-farming-forefathers.html
Sunday, June 21, 2009. My great-grandfather George Gilmer. Established our farm in part with land he purchased from his father-in-law (and my great-great-grandpa) Evans Jackson. Papa Gilmer. Farmed cotton corn and raised livestock on the farm, and was at successful enough to make a lifelong living doing it. He passed away in 1949 (six years before my father was born) so I know very little about him other than what my grandmother recorded in a book of family biographies. Friends.went to George Gilmer.

Friday, February 14, 2014. 20ish Hours of Snow. With apologies to Steinbeck, I guess we can add yet another chapter to The Winter of Our Discontent. As we experienced our first post-Groundhog Day winter weather event this week. Unlike the single-digit temperatures we endured during January's two hard freezes, this time the perils were freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Recommended: Ten Steps to a Southern Snowfall. Well, that accumulated quickly. I don't think the temperature ever did drop below 30° ov...

Friday, September 5, 2014. Farm Photo Friday (9/5/14). There's an old joke shared by dairy farmers (and I presume a few other folks) that we celebrate Labor Day by laboring. That was true for us once again on the farm, and was also the case for a couple of our pregnant cows. Cow no.086 went into labor Monday afternoon and easily birthed a heifer calf. Cow no.038 didn't have it quite so easy. My father helping cow no.038 deliver her calf. Links to this post. Thursday, September 4, 2014. Links to this post.

Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Catching up before we get caught up. Hello, y'all.it's been a while. After a long blogging hiatus attributed primarily to my preference to nap during meal breaks rather than type away on my old, slow desktop computer, I'm back to let you know what's been happening on Gilmer Dairy Farm and also with myself. Can't plant corn, but the grass is green. Glad to be spending more time. With my cows and my kids. By the way, which grass you cultivate for feeding your cows? Subscribe to: Po...
