Mike's drumbeats: April 2007
http://mikesdrumbeats.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html
Hi there. It's just me. This is Kaitlyn's stock punchline for any situation. Kaitlyn: Knock, knock. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but here's my interpretation as a dad:. I really like that line from Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" where he ponders "Is it not strange that sheep's guts should hail souls out of men's bodies? As I ate some of the local cuisine and waited for the next leg of my flight, I texted Fran "I'm here in New Mexico- I sure miss the USA." I guess because lots of peopl...

Mike's drumbeats: More Funny Kaitlyn Stuff
http://mikesdrumbeats.blogspot.com/2007/09/more-funny-kaitlyn-stuff.html
Hi there. It's just me. More Funny Kaitlyn Stuff. We're having a lot of fun getting Kaitlyn ready for her first day of preschool. She's very ready to go, and has even asked us to drive her by her school a couple of times just so she could see it again. I did not say he took the money. I did not SAY he took the money. So I went through and said it several different ways. Pausing after I gave the example "I did not say HE took the money.". After a couple of seconds, Kaitlyn piped up, "But someone else DID!

Mike's drumbeats: Ghosts of a Small Town
http://mikesdrumbeats.blogspot.com/2007/09/tales-from-small-texas-town.html
Hi there. It's just me. Ghosts of a Small Town. Oh my goodness, that place is definitely haunted! Fran warned as she checked out the website for the 100-year-old B&B in the small South Texas town. In the morning, one of my first questions at the breakfast table was, "Whose alarm clock sounds like a freight train? We went back in (out? In another account of the same man, which puported to be the "official" description of the man, he was described to have always kept a journal. Every evening, he would o...

Mike's drumbeats: January 2007
http://mikesdrumbeats.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html
Hi there. It's just me. Soaring with the Eagles. I picked up Time magazine the other day and there was a commentary on gay adoption and parenting. It was by Dr. James Dobson, who is more socially conservative than the prophet Ezekiel. So, it wasn't shocking that the argument was a case against gay. The surprising thing about the article in Time was that it makes a pretty good argument on why kids need a dad- it rang a bell. Here's what it said: "Fathers don't 'Mother'". This seemed obvious to me in the sl...

Miles Away: October 2005
http://milesawayinreno.blogspot.com/2005_10_01_archive.html
This blog is dedicated to my wonderful son, Miles. Many of our friends and family don't live in Reno, so this is a virtual way to see how he's doing and how quickly he's growing. Friday, October 28, 2005. We call him Sensi-Skin. For those of you who don't know (and most don't), it's a bacterial infection of the skin that causes scab-like outbreaks. Usually, a topical ointment can be applied to the sores, but advanced cases require internal antibiotics. Miles needed the latter. Tuesday, October 25, 2005.

Mike's drumbeats: May 2007
http://mikesdrumbeats.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html
Hi there. It's just me. I'm sometimes accused of being on the obsessive-compulsive side of things around here. It's funny, because I'm sure my actions can be interpreted that way, and I definitely go overboard sometimes when I get involved in a project. When I got home, I decided on a trick that would end some of the objection: I asked Kaitlyn to help me plant the seeds. Which seems to raise her blood pressure for some reason. Kaitlyn has now long-since lost interest in them-at first they were our baby pl...

Mike's drumbeats: July 2006
http://mikesdrumbeats.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html
Hi there. It's just me. You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat". Usually, I get blank stares. Occasionally, I'll get that brief pause, a flash of recognition, and a realization of meaning and the application to the situation. The other day, I got a nice surprise. We were putting together a robotic machine that is very complex, and everything started going wrong- We were missing vaccuum hoses and cables and cords and nothing matched up. I looked at the mess and said "You're gonna need a bigger boat! Was this a se...

Mike's drumbeats: September 2006
http://mikesdrumbeats.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html
Hi there. It's just me. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by all the things in front of me- this is going to be one of those weeks. Yesterday I was trying not to think of all of these things that I have to do- I was trying to just enjoy the day at the zoo with Fran and the kids. The weather is finally starting to turn autumn-like, which is one of my favorite times of the year. But yesterday I was fighting the urge to make mental lists of all of the things I really should be doing or will be doing. It's really j...
