位於阿里山餘脈尾稜地帶，昔稱「茄拔社」，曾是 鄒族. 侵入，致社民外遷公館匏子寮（高雄縣）及大丘園等地，部落日趨式微。1920年取其位於楠梓仙溪之西，而改為楠西，並設庄置庄役場，屬台南州新化郡管轄。戰後改為楠西鄉。 楠西是以曾文水庫及梅嶺風景區知名，使得很多人將之定位為風景區鄉鎮，而忽略當地多樣化的文化風貌。楠西鄉在發展歷史過程中，曾發生一件影響全鄉百年來發展的重大事件，即捲入當年「焦吧哖抗日事件」，引起日警大屠殺，致全鄉人口大減，再加上近年來山區人口外流嚴重，使得人口遞減。 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).
