May | 2014 | Languagecollector
https://languagecollector.wordpress.com/2014/05
Monthly Archives: May 2014. May 27, 2014. I think I have always collected languages. Where the opportunity arises to add a new one to the collection I cannot resist. That is not to say I am fluent in loads of languages. I speak a few quite well. I have studied and forgotten several. Others, like Latin, Greek and Middle Egyptian I can only read, with a lot of help. What am I trying to achieve? This WordPress.com site is the cat’s pajamas. Monthly Archives: October 2014. October 29, 2014. I have just received text of selected extracts from Sophocles’ Oedipus the King to prepare for Madingley course at the end of November. Just over a week ago I saw the Oxford Greek play: the Furies. It is wonderful that something written over 2000 years ago is still performed and enjoyed. This WordPress.com site is the cat’s pajamas. Monthly Archives: January 2015. January 2, 2015. When I heard about the uTalk language challenge I just had to get involved. After looking at all the options my first thought was Icelandic but I got carried away and started so that meant I could not do Icelandic for the challenge. After much deliberation I eventually chose Turkish. This WordPress.com site is the cat’s pajamas. Create a free website or blog at WordPress.com. Create a free website or blog at WordPress.com.
July | 2014 | Languagecollector
https://languagecollector.wordpress.com/2014/07
Monthly Archives: July 2014. July 18, 2014. I have just returned from Spain, a country I have been visiting several times a year for the last 12 years. Spanish is also one of my working languages. It is all too easy these days to spend days at a time in the country without really speaking the language. This trip has been an exception and so I have decided it in appropriate to add Spanish to my collection at this time. July 6, 2014. Russian is one of the languages that I know well, having learnt and relea...

A translator's blog about languages. Newcastle was an inspired location for the ITI’s 2015 conference. Newcastle is well connected geographically, making it accessible to people from all over the UK and Europe. A well-attended tweetup, Yoga and Salsa classes, a run, singing translators and a music ensemble enhanced the networking opportunities and complemented the theme of renewal, rejuvenation and regeneration. A translator's blog about languages. SWOT yourself a better marketing letter. At this time of year I usually look back over the previous 12 months both personally (where have I been, what shows have I seen, what books I have read) and from a business perspective (busy months, quiet times, interesting jobs, good clients, cash flow, CPD, etc.). These goals can be your opportunities. Threats may be things you have less control over, such as late payments, or no payments, infrequent work, low rates, etc&...

A translator's blog about languages. The assertive translator and the deadline debate. Sorry that’s not my language pair. Sorry I don’t feel comfortable with that subject area. Sorry but I only translate into English. I think we are all comfortable with refusing to do work that is not in our language combination or specialist area but some colleagues seem to be concerned about an increased prevalence of short deadlines. The aim of the game is to build a good working relationship with your clients. On...

Are formatting surcharges still viable? | Lakesidelinguist's Blog
https://lakesidelinguist.wordpress.com/2014/11/15/are-formatting-surcharges-still-viable
A translator's blog about languages. Are formatting surcharges still viable? A very interesting blog on a subject I have given very little consideration to. I haven’t converted a PDF in years. A query from a colleague yesterday set me off on this train of thought: she’d proposed a PowerPoint surcharge to a long-standing agency client and been told that surely surcharges weren’t relevant any more, now that most CAT tools process files in most common formats. Hmmm, I wonder? 1,219 more words.
