Language Digger: January 2011

http://languagedigger.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, January 19, 2011. Hedgehogs are blessed with wonderfully descriptive names in every language. The English name brings to mind a little animal snuffling around under bushes. In German, they are called igel. From an Old Teutonic word for "prickly." In Russian, a hedgehog is a ёж. Yozh) I couldn't think what the root would be offhand, so I decided to look it up for fun. Is like the name медведь. Med-VED', "bear") because it is a cyper, in this case meaning "snake eater.". The Economist Style Guide.

Language Digger: December 2010

http://languagedigger.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 17, 2010. I had a bit of a lull in late November and got some reading done. I'd been looking forward to stepping back from the actual work of translation and reading about why it's so important (not that I need convincing, mind). Even though I've been a translator for 12 years now, something about Why Translation Matters. Why do literary critics give translators the cold shoulder? That don't really get my blood pumping. 1 If you're still looking for an agent, don't get your whole book tr...

Language Digger: April 2011

Sunday, April 3, 2011. Tired Hands, Reading Backwards. Since I want to keep working for many, many years these aches and pains are starting to worry me. I've already tried the fancy ergonomic keyboard. It didn't help. Other translators swear by speech recognition software. Language and the world we live in. January 7, 2017. I’ve been playing with my shortwave radio lately. I haven’t turned into one of those guys who strings up wires all over the house to try to improve reception (at least not yet), but I’ve got my little portable receiver, and it’s about the most relaxing thing I do trying to tune in frequencies and listen in on what people are saying. I. Z (the year in Slovak sport. Name day celebrations in elementary school. At 9580 or elsewhere. I’m usually not somehow,...
