Beyond Baseball: September 2010

September 28, 2010. Joe and I were raised to be thrifty. We’ve lived in the same house now for nearly 24 years. Most of the furnishings and decor are years out of fashion and way past their “expiration dates”. But as long as we can get by with what we have, we feel no sense of urgency to update. Our appliances? But some things just can’t be tolerated. When the coffee grinder broke last week, it was replaced before nightfall. And when our desktop computer lost the ability to connect to the i...I loved eve...

April 24, 2011. But then, she decided she needed to carry a package of wipes, too. Of course, the water bottle was heavy, and the wipes were both heavy and slippery, and they needed repositioning every 3 or 4 steps. Our brisk walk had turned into a very, very slow stroll, 3 or 4 steps at a time. Grandpa finally lifted Isla onto his shoulders. Must have been too scary. Because at that point, she chose the stroller. April 11, 2011. My Trellis Wears a Jacket. Why does my trellis wear a jacket? At first I bl...

November 30, 2010. Smart Cats, Bad Decorator…or Both? The cats know they are not supposed to bother the tree, but when we’re not looking, they pull the balls off. I suppose that’s not altogether a bad thing, because since I’m never too confident of my decorating abilities, this gives me a chance to try multiple times to get it right. But this morning, as I walked into the room, I had a realization: all four of the balls I saw on the carpet, and all those I’d seen the previous day were green! Saben and Na...

September 19, 2011. I’ve never been one to welcome change. I get a sense of comfort and security from having sameness and stability in my life. When things are going great, why rock the boat? Unfortunately, God (and others) don’t always agree with me. I’m experiencing some significant changes in my life right now. Some of them are hard for me but good for others. Although these changes have not been easy, I can accept them as necessary and right. Here are some things I’m trying to learn:. I've been marri...

October 26, 2010. Just Can’t Get Enough of This Grandparenting Thing! Last weekend Joe and I had the privilege of taking care of Isla while her mom and dad took a 4-day trip to Santa Barbara. I’m sure it was hard for Kelsie and Graham to leave their precious little girl, but it was so much fun for us! So, thank-you, Kelsie and Graham! Gideon is so cute and cuddly! Well, I guess we did manage to capture Isla, after all! Check this out: Isla is guiding Joe’s hand, using it to pat the baby! We left LaniR...

Beyond Baseball: My Trellis Wears a Jacket

April 11, 2011. My Trellis Wears a Jacket. My trellis wears a jacket. This year it’s green. Why does my trellis wear a jacket? Because of the squirrels. I used to think they were adorable, those furry little creatures with the bushy tails. And so I giggled when my sister lamented over the third garbage can lid they’d destroyed. I even laughed when she told the story of how they had gnawed through her window screens and scattered Oreo cookie crumbs all over her kitchen. I witnessed those clever little mis...

December 27, 2010. What a gift it was to have all the kids and their spouses and our grandkids here for Christmas! Kelsie, Graham, and Isla arrived on the 23rd, so we extra time to hang out with them. Here’s Isla playing with her favorite toy at Grandma and Grandpa’s house:. Graham cooked dinner for us that night: a wonderful pasta dish with sausage and fresh fennel, and a salad of arugula, pears, and fresh parmesan. Yum! After dinner we played some Yahtzee. First item of business: The traditional family...

May 8, 2011. A Portrait of Grandma Young: A Mother’s Day tribute for my kids, siblings, nieces and nephews to enjoy. My mom passed away when Ben was less than two years old, so I knew that he’d be left with few memories of her. Yet, I wanted him to know her. This is something I put together for him a few years ago. I thought I would share it with all of you today. I hope you enjoy the memories! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Excuse me, I think your homeschool is showing.
