paying respect - {the missing teacher}
http://lanivcox.blogspot.com/2011/05/paying-respect.html
A young teacher's experience with Waldorf education.and her journey beyond. I attended the TEDxDoiSuthep. Conference this weekend. The keynote speaker, at least in my mind was female Buddhist monk Dhammananda Bikkun. She talked about nourishing roots. The four elements: earth, water, fire and air. Nourishing our selves. Specifically, about the aspect of Buddhism that deals with paying respect to our elders and past. Thich Nhat Hanh said it this way, we are the extension of our parents. Suddenly all of th...
Becoming a teacher - {the missing teacher}
http://lanivcox.blogspot.com/2015/04/becoming-teacher.html
A young teacher's experience with Waldorf education.and her journey beyond. Sorry, I hope you weren’t expecting a pep talk. When I decided to be a Waldorf teacher, I remember the exact moment, the out loud declaration at the wheel of my Nissan Sentra. And do you know what I did? Of course, there are wonderful students, too. Unfortuantely, they are not enough to balance out the bureaucracy and politics and negativity that have unhappily made its way into the classrooms. So, why do I still do it? A colleag...

A young teacher's experience with Waldorf education.and her journey beyond. What makes Waldorf education, Waldorf education? BBC’s Chris Cook. Asks a good question, “Is Waldorf education worth public money? 8221; I can’t speak for England, but I can say for the US, there is a fair amount of Waldorf charter schools receiving public funding. After all, there is an Alliance for Public Waldorf Education. So, what makes Waldorf education, Waldorf education? Is Waldorf a religious school? I think if Waldorf-in...

A young teacher's experience with Waldorf education.and her journey beyond. To Compliment or Criticize Students? Did you know that teachers are inadequately trained to praise their students? Yes, in this Atlantic article. Schools are failing to teach teachers how to classroom manage and praise students. But what I found interesting is schools themselves are not trained to give praise to teachers, so why would they teach teachers to do something they don’t even do? I suppose it depends on who you talk to&...

Matt's Travel & Living Blog: December 2012
http://mattpeel.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Matts Travel and Living Blog. Story Bridge in Brisbane, Australia). Saturday, December 8, 2012. Just Roll with It. It read, “Hi. This is Gu. Josh’s boss. Please call me if you free. Thank you.”. As I was groggily recalling the who’s and what’s surrounding this Mr. Gu that was texting me, my phone rang. It was Mr. Gu calling. Again. His eagerness to contact me seemed like a positive sign for my prospect for employment. 8220;Yes, I talked to Josh last night. Hello Gu. How are you? 8221; he demanded. Moment...

Matts Travel and Living Blog. Story Bridge in Brisbane, Australia). Friday, March 26, 2010. A blog about Thailand wouldn't be complete without some discussion about the political instability. My arrival to Thailand. Was drastically altered because Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok airport) was closed due to protesters storming it and occupying it for over a week! Soon after, the ruling government party was found guilty of electoral fraud and a new government was established. Red-shirt protesters on Silom Road.
Matt's Travel & Living Blog: Destination China - 2nd Leg
http://mattpeel.blogspot.com/2012/11/destination-china-2nd-leg.html
Matts Travel and Living Blog. Story Bridge in Brisbane, Australia). Friday, November 2, 2012. Destination China - 2nd Leg. The flight to Singapore was 7 hours and it seemed to go by quickly. I spent most of the time watching movies, which included, “The Hunger Games”, “Prometheus”, and “Red Dog”. A cute, Australian film based on the true story of an Outback dog. Confused, we asked the information desk about our flight, and they told us that we had to go to terminal 3! We were going to make it! We checked...

Matts Travel and Living Blog. Story Bridge in Brisbane, Australia). Monday, November 12, 2012. Arriving in China - Home Stanky Home. The drive from Yantai airport to the town of Penglai took an hour and it was mostly on highways with little traffic. We couldn’t see too much of the landscape due to the fog/haze. We could make out a mountain in the distance and a few wind farms. It was mainly rural with lots of farmland, mostly apple orchards. Our apartment building viewed from the main street. The walls w...

Matts Travel and Living Blog. Story Bridge in Brisbane, Australia). Saturday, February 21, 2009. Food Review - Charley Brown's Tex-Mex Cantina. The rice tasted like Rice-a-roni, the beans were the wrong type and flavor (I would have accepted refried, charro, pinto, or black beans), and the chicken had no flavor. It was obvious that all they did was cook a chicken breast on the grill with minimal seasoning and cut it into strips. Where was the Tex-Mex flavor? No flan or fried ice cream or fruit? Our table...

Matts Travel and Living Blog. Story Bridge in Brisbane, Australia). Sunday, March 8, 2009. Lunchtime Food Hawker Stalls. The standard set-up is a central stall where the raw food is stored and cooked. Surrounding the 'kitchen' are portable tables with umbrellas (for the rain) and chairs where the patrons sit and eat. Afterwards, the dirty dishes are collected, washed in a bucket, and re-used. In the above picture, the kitchen is located on the corner with seating along the front of the Family Mart. Pleas...

Matts Travel and Living Blog. Story Bridge in Brisbane, Australia). Friday, December 17, 2010. After living in Thailand for over a year, the thought of moving to Australia where everybody spoke English was refreshing. There was no need of learning a new language and no more lost-in-translation moments over simple matters. The only thing I'd have to adjust to was the Australian accent, which, compared to a British accent, was in my opinion much easier to understand. Gedday (G'Day) - Good Day, as in "Hello".

Matts Travel and Living Blog. Story Bridge in Brisbane, Australia). Thursday, November 25, 2010. Living "down under" in Bunbury. Paul Hogan in 'Crocodile Dundee'. I love the Drover's Platter at Outback! Reflecting on all my history courses, I never learned anything more about Australia other than its origin as a place for the British empire to send their criminals. Here is some more information about the land down under. Australia is the 6th largest country by area, 52nd largest by population. 90% of the...

A young teacher's experience with Waldorf education.and her journey beyond. 25 Ideas for the EFL classroom. I’ve been teaching English as a Foreign Language since 2010 and prior to that I was a Waldorf teacher (and I even did graduate work in Montessori education). When I was getting my teaching certificate (TESOL) for teaching English in 2009, I knew that my Waldorf background would be beneficial. In Waldorf we had to be conscious of how long the children were sitting in their seats, and in EFL it’...

Life, the Universe and Lani. For expats and explorers. Guest posts, etc. And a writing manifesto. The book’s blog. At home in Siem Reap. August 13, 2015. Chiang Mai Thailand on the left and Siem Reap Cambodia on the right. Guess which one is more exciting during the rainy season? And I’m willing to wager, more expats, too. But for the sake of politeness, they just blanked out for a few slow seconds and returned to normal conversation. Despite my unrealistic expectations, we moved into our new apartment o...
