Southern Pacific Passenger Equipment

By 1959 the Southern Pacific began painting their lightweight passenger equipment in Sunset color scheme, silver for the car sides and roof and a red letter board stripe, dark gray was used for the under body and trucks. Listed below are the types of lightweight cars that ran on both the Coast Daylight, San Joaquin and the Sunset trains during the 1960s. SP 10403, was well known for the greasiest burgers on rails. Built for the "Sunset Limited". Don't ask for cheese. Built for the "Sunset Limited".

SP Depots and a Freight Stations in LA

This was the first stop from LAUPT for the Coast Daylight and Lark heading towards San Francisco along the Coast Line. The San Joaquin Daylight and the Owl made their stops, then left on the Valley Route at Burbank Junction towards Bakersfield. Was built about 1905 to serve as a local shipping and receiving freight station and secondary passenger traffic. Was the first stop east from LAUPT for the Sunset, Golden State other passenger trains that ran on this line. Was located in downtown Los Angeles.

Industries in Downtown, Los Angeles, CA. Photo by Bruce Petty. Not too long ago downtown Los Angeles was a major industrial business area. Railroad switch engines would work night and day on a maze of switching leads to ship products to and from their loading docks doors. Sitting at Second Street, a Santa Fe, Alco HH-1000 and crew are busy with switching work.
