Hulin Music: February 2015
http://hulinmusic.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Musings of a classical pianist . . . Wednesday, February 25, 2015. These days, I am having the privilege and fun of supporting a piano student in his first serious efforts at engaging with Mozart. He has played two or three Beethoven sonatas and done so rather well. A couple of lessons into his Mozart experience, he initiated a thoughtful conversation about how playing Mozart is distinctly different from playing Beethoven. Is a clear example of this. Gives an idea of this. Posted by Charles Hulin. Good a...

Hulin Music: Rich Days
http://hulinmusic.blogspot.com/2015/03/rich-days.html
Musings of a classical pianist . . . Friday, March 20, 2015. This March has been perhaps the busiest ever at our house or at least for the people who live at our house. But I could be wrong about that as there have been some really busy Marches before. If you're not familiar with the term "ekphrastic" I suggest looking it up as it's a fun one to know. A piano solo from Arthur Farwell's Impressions of the Wa-Wan Ceremony of the Omahas. A Chinese folk song sung by a colleague. The program was the life Chri...

Hulin Music: Learning Aesthetics
http://hulinmusic.blogspot.com/2009/07/learning-aesthetics.html
Musings of a classical pianist . . . Tuesday, July 07, 2009. After the Festival, I took a trip to Charlotte, NC to visit a student. While there, I had a great time staying with friends in the Hyaets Community. I also took the opportunity to visit Rock Hill, SC where I lived from 3rd grade to 11th grade. From some vantage points, the fountain is easily seen and framed from a distance and a higher elevation. From other directions, it is hidden until almost the last moment of one's approach. One can...Refle...

Hulin Music: April 2015
http://hulinmusic.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Musings of a classical pianist . . . Saturday, April 18, 2015. Last night, I was surprised by an answer to a question I wasn't asking. The question is related to questions I ask, but I don't think I've ever really considered it before. Why was time created? The answer was a profound one, one I found a little reductive. Perhaps because I was being too literal). And kind of jarring. I normally think of time as a mystery. But we seem to be passing through it,. Or maybe it's more like we're caught in it.

Hulin Music: Glencairn
http://hulinmusic.blogspot.com/2015/07/glencairn.html
Musings of a classical pianist . . . Wednesday, July 08, 2015. I've blogged before about the role Glencairn Gardens played in the formation of my aesthetics. In June, I revisited this lovely spot and now I'm blogging what was the stream of consciousness at that time. Stereo fountains and green-screened trails. Solitary benches for pondering and prayer. Hidden lawns where youngsters cuddle. And bridges for meetings real and imagined. A garden for grown-ups, too -. Strong willows and sunlit cypresses.

Hulin Music: August 2014
http://hulinmusic.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Musings of a classical pianist . . . Friday, August 29, 2014. As Kathy and I reach our 17. Wedding anniversary, I find myself thinking of the pains and losses we have suffered over the years. Some of those things seem like they could have really thrown us for a loop but I don't think any of them have. Lately I have found myself hearing from more and more atheists, agnostics, and believers who struggle with the question "How can a good God let such bad things happen? I think faith is much more than intell...
