The Genealogical Society of Tasmania was formed in Hobart in April 1980. Subsequently an open meeting of people interested in forming a Launceston Branch of the Society was held at the Kings Meadows High School on 4 November 1980, and the first Annual General Meeting of the Launceston Branch was held on the 7 April 1981. As from 1 April 2001, the name of the Society was changed to Tasmanian Family History Society Inc. THE BRITISH ISLES INTEREST GROUP (BIG).
