Metal | Laura Jones Beads

Metal beads can be either solid gold/silver etc, which are often expensive, or plated. I tend not to work with larger metal beads (they cost a lot! But I use small beads and 'spacers' extensively. A bit of a glint can 'lift' dark colours, make simple beads look more expensive, and they complement semi precious stones wonderfully well. They can be very effective and are a fraction of the cost.

Impulse buying is fun, but if you are after something very specific, shopping can be frustrating and time-consuming. If you need jewellery in a particular length or colour, why not have it custom-made? It need not cost the earth - a simple necklace and earrings could cost around 20. Perfect for a present for that hard-to-please friend or relative. Choose your favourite beads from websites or shops. Pick the kind of clasps and fixings you prefer. Combine specific colours to blend with that special outfit.

Shell | Laura Jones Beads

Shell beads are usually flat, and very lightweight, by they are breakable! Natural shell beads include mother of pearl (pale cream), black-lip shell (creamy/pinky grey shades) and abalone (paua shell). Shell can also be dyed, either a monochrome, or patterned. It all has a lovely shimmery sheen to the surface. I find shell beads make very good jewellery for the spring and summer months. The texture and light-reflecting qualities somehow seem to feel just right.

Where do I start? Glass beads come in almost infinite shapes and sizes, from tiny seed beads to big chunky pendants. Glass can be used alone, or mixed with almost any other material. It can be rustic or elegant; delicate or chunky; bright and bold or neutral and unassuming. However it can quite heavy. You can create almost any. With glass beads. The only problem is choosing your favourites .

Alterations | Laura Jones Beads

One of the reasons I started making my own jewellery was that little bag of broken or never-used, but much-loved items in the bottom drawer of the cupboard! Most of us girlies have such a stash somewhere. I am happy to restring, or redesign existing bits and bobs at very reasonable rates. Recycling is very satisfying, and eco-friendly!

Hence I feel it sensible to record here her instructions for creating them. 8oz/227g plain flour (see note 1). 6 oz/170g butter (see note 2). 1 egg yolk (keep white to beat up and use on edges and tops). To use the fonts easily some minor changes may be useful to the applet to ease selection of the different fonts.
