Everything will be fine in the end. If it is not fine, it is not the end. .: July 2011

http://lauramann.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Everything will be fine in the end. If it is not fine, it is not the end. . Monday, 4 July 2011. A thought about the marginality of African studies…. This was the best. I was on two panels, one. On 'tribalism' and globalization/liberalization and one. On ethnographic approaches to African states. In some ways, I think this is partly due to sources of funding. While Africanists often complain that Africa is marginalized by academia and by the big disciplines like History, Sociology and to a lesser ext...

Everything will be fine in the end. If it is not fine, it is not the end. . Friday, 4 February 2011. David Harris on Sierra Leone and Liberia: Relevance to Sudan? I am dying to write a post on Egypt but first I wait for Mubarak to leave…yaaaalllla! In the meantime, I wanted to share a few notes and comments about David Harris. And has been discussed and debated on Alex de Waal’s excellent blog, Making Sense of Sudan. Especially in discussions about the Save Darfur movement and the ICC. Interestingly, on ...

Everything will be fine in the end. If it is not fine, it is not the end. . Thursday, 25 February 2010. Treasures in the Library: The University of Khartoum Development Studies and Research Centre Monograph Series. Here another librarian took one look at them, scratched his head and then began to search a storage closet. It was a very exciting (and dusty) afternoon for us both. We found (almost) the complete series after searching and climbing and searching some more. He let me take them away...If you wa...

Everything will be fine in the end. If it is not fine, it is not the end. . Friday, 9 December 2011. Understanding the geography and structure of the internet in East Africa. So this is my first proper post in a long time and it is not really about Sudan, so I suppose at some point, I should change the name of my blog. More specifically, I will explain how the internet works in East Africa. To put it into the East African context, in the summer of 2009, three underwater fibre optic cables began to 'turn ...

Researching South Sudan: Kuajok on Heglig

http://zoecormack.blogspot.com/2012/04/not-hippos.html

Saturday, 14 April 2012. I was going to write a post about hippos. But then the SPLA took Heglig and we seem to be teetering on the verge of war. With the Republic of Sudan. I don’t think that war is inevitably round the corner, I am cautiously optimistic that a resolution to Heglig will be found. But I was finding it hard to concentrate on hippos. What are people in Kuajok saying about the spirally political situation? These are the positions that I am hearing a lot. People are very angry with the UN an...

Researching South Sudan: September 2011

Wednesday, 7 September 2011. A Working Guide to Graves in Lakes State. This is a bit out there. I am have a blossoming interesting in graves in and around Rumbek and I want to indulge it. This could just be morbid curiosity but think this came from a wider interest in the architecture and built environment of Rumbek. Grave stones, being solid stone, survive better than a lot of other things. Posts where cattle had been tethered before being sacrificed. (See a photo. The Grave of Arol Kucuol, Cueibet.

Researching South Sudan: Disappearing Heritage of Sudan, 1820-1956

Monday, 26 March 2012. Disappearing Heritage of Sudan, 1820-1956. There is a really great looking exhibition opening in London next month. Photographer and filmmaker, Frederique Cifuentes spent 6 years in Sudan documenting ruins and remnants of the colonial period(s), "this photographic and video project is an exploration of the mechanics of empire through its official buildings, private residencies, cinema houses, railways, irrigation canals and bridges.". Who took over and why? 28 December 2015 at 09:59.

Researching South Sudan: July 2011

http://zoecormack.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 20 July 2011. Dancing in Freedom Square. The last few weeks in Rumbek have been up and down. The Independence celebrations lasted for about a week, schools and many offices where closed and there were events every evening on Freedom Square (dances, athletics and football competitions). On Saturday morning, the Bishop of Rumbek, Ceaser Mazzolari died while giving mass. It’s a kind of self-mimicry or self-representation. Many of the participants feel quite distant from the ‘cattl...After maybe a...

Researching South Sudan: October 2011

http://zoecormack.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 11 October 2011. The road to Wau. I like travelling by road. You see more, you stop in interesting places and you meet and talk to fellow travelers (because you are bumping along with them in an intimate fashion for hours and hours). Road travel gives me more of an illusion of safety, because I am not thousands of miles above the air in a metal shell. Although I realise it is the least safe way to travel. We made a further stop at the turning for Mapel to unload food (for the army? We walked fro...

http://zoecormack.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, 4 February 2012. The Road to Wau, part 2. Public transport to Wau again. I re-iterate that I like public transport in South Sudan, I could fly, but I don’t enjoy it as much. Having said that yesterday’s journey had some highlights that made me wish I was safely strapped into a UN/WFP plane. We went to the bus stop in Rumbek early, too early it turned out, no one was there. The two friends I was with did some negotiation on my behalf to get me (1) in a good seat, (2) in a good car. In Tonj we st...

Researching South Sudan: brief update from Kuajok

http://zoecormack.blogspot.com/2012/04/brief-update-from-kuajok.html

Tuesday, 17 April 2012. Brief update from Kuajok. Heading to Lietnhom tomorrow to do some work at seed fairs and hopefully learn a bit about agricultural trade in Warrap. There is considerable uncertainly in Kuajok at the moment, amidst calls for mobilisation. S against the UN statement asking South Sudan to withdraw from Heglig. I can feel the battle lines hardening almost daily. Probably out of internet and phone reception for the next week or so. 28 April 2012 at 02:29. View my complete profile.

Researching South Sudan: Rap[Jang]

http://zoecormack.blogspot.com/2012/04/rapjang.html

Monday, 9 April 2012. This blog entry marks my general appreciation for rap (sourgum). It’s a staple food here and grown on every homestead. I took a few photos last weekend of rap being prepared. After the harvest in September/October time the rap is stored on a elevated platform, called kat (kat rap to be precise). See left. When flour is to be prepared it is taken down and moved to the smooth mud platform in the centre of the homestead (baai cielic). Enjoy with a variety of soupy sauces. The History B...

Everything will be fine in the end. If it is not fine, it is not the end. . Saturday, 2 June 2012. Making sense of BPO in East Africa. What I want to reflect upon in this blog is the importance of conceptual understandings in developing economies, and in particular, on how people “make sense” of a new field like Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO). Kenya and Rwanda are both trying to market themselves as growing ICT hubs, and in particular, as BPO destinations. 8221; in much the same fashion as people ...

LauraMann | This Time

Music pulled me in when I was very young.". When Laura Mann was eight years old, most of her dreams included a guitar. When her mom got her that guitar her dreams became a reality. Learning to play her first instrument was serious business. "My Mom and Dad understood that," she says, and her Mom made sure her daughter was at her lesson every week from then on. My mom loves music as much as I do. She's my biggest fan," Laura laughs. Like A Lamb Among. 147 Bleeker st. Ny ny 10012. November 30 7:30 pm.
