Saturday, March 8, 2014. I had the privilege of attending a presentation by John Guzzwell last week- an event sponsored by the Wooden Boat Society of the San Juan Islands. I was incredibly impressed with his recall of other folks on extensive voyages in those days (the 50's), and by his charismatic yet humble storytelling. Only by exhaustive efforts bailing the boat, and ingenuity in designing a jury rig and rudder/tiller system, did they eventually make landfall in South America. View my complete profile.

Wednesday, December 14, 2011. An Unexpected Blast from the Past. What a superb little boat. I was the 4th owner of Thlaloca a sloop rigged trekka sistership built in 1959-60 by Hein Zenker. Hein and his wife Siggi sailed Thlaloca around the world starting in '61 with a small dog aboard. Mentioned in a book titled. The Circumnavigators by Donald Holm. Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Having spent all winter in the Bay Area, I was eager to return to our place on Orcas Island in April. I was optimistic that TERN had fared well over the course of the winter, and friends had repeatedly checked up on her for me. Clean and dry, custom bow pulpit ready to have attachment tabs welded on. The list of projects aren't necessary, but will make TERN safer and easier for offshore sailing:. Install custom bow pulpit. Replace old plexiglass portlights with new bronze-tint lexan.

The keel is fabricated out of 3/8"-1/2" galvanized mild steel, and is connected to two pieces of angle (one on either side of the keel plate) with a series of horizontal bolts. The angle pieces are, in turn, fastened vertically through the keel timber and floor timbers (both are of white oak) with stainless steel bolts.
