League of Urban Canners. The League of Urban Canners (LUrC) offers harvesting services for fruit trees and arbors primarily in the Cambridge and Somerville area. Most of the fruit we harvest is processed into preserves such as jams, jellies, and dried fruit. Ten percent of the preserves we make from a tree or arbor is returned to the owner. Harvesting starts in the spring and ends in late fall. The following is a list of fruit that we harvest. Cherries (sweet and sour). Cornelian cherries (Cornus mas).

League of Urban Canners. The League of Urban Canners (LUrC) was founded by Sam Christy in the late fall of 2011 when he and some friends from the Somerville Yogurt Making Coop. In just a few years, LUrC has built a database of over 300 fruit trees and arbors and has agreements with owners to harvest just under 100 of these. In addition, as carfree advocates, many members of the group complete their work using pedal (and foot) power and a really long bike trailer! You can also connect with us on Facebook.

League of Urban Canners. How do I find out about harvests? Harvests are posted on the listserv during harvest season. To join a harvest simply respond to the postings. Join the listserv here. Can I participate if I don’t have any experience? Most of our members join without ever having harvested fruit, made preserves, or pruned trees. New members learn these skills working alongside experienced members. Isn’t fruit from the city bad to eat? LURC is part of an ongoing study to answer this very question!

It is ideal for leaving at houses where you see delicious fruit that looks like it needs to be harvested. In addition to the single page flyer. You can download a version that contains four mini flyers. Can be given to home-owners at their request. It waives all liability they might face should a member of LUrC be injured on their property.
