I have recently adopted a new hobby, ‘people-watching’. It’s interesting to read the emotions and nuances that people try to hide. Many of my characters are spun out of that. A few months back I was attending a mehendi ceremony. That was inevitable, wasn’t it. If you rob a person of their dignity, you will kill their self-pride, and a lack of work-pride can only generate mediocrity. In all our misguided casteism and reservation, isn’t that exactly what we have done to our country?

January 1, 2017. Praise the creation of the new world…. My city is still recovering from a cyclone that knocked out almost a hundred thousand trees. To me, a happy new year would be the return of our lost precious green cover. The wild almond tree outside my house fell, narrowly missing my car by less than a foot’s distance and we had to chop the branches off, but I can already see the resilient little leaves sprout again. Yesterday he stomped through the backyard beating down the ‘wild and dangerous trees’ with his little plastic sword, the brave explorer going ‘where no man has dared to go before’, sometimes hunting down dragons and sometimes collecting stones to build his own home. Today as he packs for college I know that the true adventure begins, as armed only with a pen and grit, he’s going to traverse the wild and dangerous real world, slaying his own dragons, building his true home. I love it 🙂.
