A CD that has been enjoyed by my students is "Jim Gill Sings The Sneezing Song and Other Contagious Tunes". I love that many of the songs focus on following directions (a vital skill! And are still very fun. Many musical skills and objectives for young students and special needs students are addressed in this CD as well. Hands Are For Clapping. The Hi Dee Ho Man.

Jedi Music: Would Abby Lee Make It As a Public School Teacher?
http://carrie-persichini.blogspot.com/2012/01/would-abby-lee-make-it-as-public-school.html
A Resource for the Beginning Elementary Music Teacher. Would Abby Lee Make It As a Public School Teacher? I've been hearing about "Dance Moms". As much as teachers are given a bad image in the media and beyond, I can't help but wonder how Ms. Miller would be received as a public school teacher. Personally, I have to think that the same parents who tolerate such atrocious teaching methods while paying dance school tuition (not to mention the expense of the competitions! I do realize that most of the "dram...

Jedi Music: Inclusion
http://carrie-persichini.blogspot.com/2011/07/inclusion.html
A Resource for the Beginning Elementary Music Teacher. What are your thoughts and experiences about inclusive education? Inclusion is a part of my work each day. Language support, autistic support, and life skills support are all included with their typically developing peers in my schools. This is a valuable part of their day, as in their post-graduate future, they will be spending most of their time in the mainstream. For more thoughts on inclusion, see here. A Resource for the Beginning Elementary Music Teacher. Gold star and a high-five to the first commenter who knows where that title comes from! And apologies to everyone who now has that song stuck in their head for the next few hours. What are your thoughts and experiences about teamwork among educators? Teamwork is essential to the educational process. If we are not displaying the willingness to work as a team with our fellow educators, how can we foster the ability in our students? Recently, a third gr...

Jedi Music: Kick the new school year off right...with Music Football!
http://carrie-persichini.blogspot.com/2011/08/kick-new-school-year-off-rightwith.html
A Resource for the Beginning Elementary Music Teacher. Kick the new school year off right.with Music Football! I like to start the school year off with a review game for my older students (4th, 5th, and 6th grades).and what better game for the fall season than (American) Football.although I've tweaked the rules to review musical vocabulary. Or instruments that the students can identify. Making the football field by hand was a big time investment when I made the first one (about 10 years ago! 183; After i...

Jedi Music: Collaboration
http://carrie-persichini.blogspot.com/2011/07/collaboration.html
A Resource for the Beginning Elementary Music Teacher. Recently I was asked a series of thought-provoking questions by a colleague/friend who is working on her master's program. These are worth sharing with new teachers because quite a few of them make very nice interview questions, and we all know how important it is to be on top of your game in the teaching job interview! By no means are my answers extensive, they are just a jumping off point into discussion, I hope! Labels: beginning music teachers.

Jedi Music: Make Your Own: "Ribbon Wands"
http://carrie-persichini.blogspot.com/2012/01/make-your-own-ribbon-wands.html
A Resource for the Beginning Elementary Music Teacher. Make Your Own: "Ribbon Wands". There are terrific products out there for teaching music.but who can afford them all? Sometimes I devise ways to make my own for much less money. Some time ago I bought rainbow ribbon wands. Luckily, a student who was into fishing told me that the swiveling hook holding each ribbon to the wand looked just like a snap swivel hook. He used for fishing. Once I found these at a local store (very inexpensive! Every teacher n...

Jedi Music: Quiet!
http://carrie-persichini.blogspot.com/2011/10/quiet.html
A Resource for the Beginning Elementary Music Teacher. Every teacher needs to develop a "quiet signal". For those times (and they happen often.) when their students are too loud. Elementary students of all ages can get carried away by an activity, excited for any reason, and sometimes just want to visit with their friends. For these times, a quiet signal is necessary. The one that I use the most is counting down from 3. I remind the students, "When I get to one, you're done" (talking, that is! Gold star ...

Jedi Music: Vocal Timbre Practice with the Three Bears
http://carrie-persichini.blogspot.com/2012/01/vocal-timbre-practice-with-three-bears.html
A Resource for the Beginning Elementary Music Teacher. Vocal Timbre Practice with the Three Bears. My kindergarten language support students love a good snuggle with a stuffed animal, as witnessed in a recent music class. We had three visitors: Papa, Mama, and Baby Bear, right out of the story "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". Using stuffed animals in the lesson helped some of my shy students gain more courage to try out their low, medium, and high voices. Start this lesson on different vocal timbres by ...
