Monday, September 29, 2008. Social Studies Combined with Social SKills. Remembering that kinders have very little understanding of the use of puppets is a key concept when using these types of props. Using the puppets to promote discussion during Social Studies is a great idea. Creating rules to promote discussion is an absolute prerequisite for introducing this type of element into the classroom. More to come as we attempt the retraining process. Monday, December 8, 2008. We talked about it a minute and he was not to be persuaded so I suggested he talk about it with his mom and he was happy about that idea. We moved on to the leveled books and attempted to use the graphic organizers to retell the story. This helped a little but I found the questions in the back of each leveled book also assisted in the retell process. On the whole working through Unit 2 in November was a very positive experience. Over half of the students are ELL and because we are having discussions so frequently all the students have something important to say about our classroom and their responsibility in keeping it clean. Sunday, August 31, 2008. Getting Ready . . . Working Together. Teachers are working hard to be ready to start school beginning September 2nd. The difficult parts about starting school are numerous: Teaching new students the routines, mastering new curriculum such as social studies, getting back in the daily groove and process of teaching school.
