Design Think

I love this quote. It’s often hard to separate design and style, sometimes they are synonymous. I know Sagmeister has since distanced himself from this quote, but I still think that style should come after the idea – or not at all. But then isn’t lack of style a style in its own right? On the creative working environment. Our creativity is incredibly affected by the environment we work in. Thirdly: air quality. Lack of air soon encourages the eyes to droop and breathing to slow, resulting in less oxy...
I’ve got my printed portfolio, website and promo... – Design Think
http://www.design-think.co.uk/post/97655909077/wltm
I’ve got my printed portfolio, website. And promo item sorted. I’ve researched my favourite studios and worked out who I want to work for. I know where in the country I don’t want to work and that I want to live within cycling distance of my future job. Now I just have to find the right studio for me. It feels so daunting, but at the same time I’m full of energy and excitement. I’ve got a lot to give, Would you Like To Meet me? A blog by Alix Land. Who writes Design Think? My name is Alix Land and I’m a graphic designer blogging through the alias Design Think. Design Think is a place for me to air my ideas and thoughts about (though not exclusively) graphic design. I also take photos and have a geeky obsession with typography. If you want to find out more about me, have a look at my portfolio. On Flickr. You can also contact me by email. Why ‘Design Think’? A blog by Alix Land. A recent trip to Cornwall in search of some. Inspired by Christopher Somerville’s Britain and Ireland’s Best Wild Places. I find bicycles so photogenic. Perhaps it’s because their form is so functional. Incidentally, one of my favourite bloggers, David the Designer, has been taking photos of his bicycling and where it has taken him, under the title of The Summer of Cycling. Myanmar was far more challenging to travel in (though still interesting) with their country being held back for seemingly fifty year...

London’s backwaters – Design Think
http://www.design-think.co.uk/post/50079886482/londons-backwaters
In my hideout away from London in N1, I can hear birdsong and smell the sweet burnt coal from the boats. City noises evaporate and nature resounds. High-pitched whistles and tweets from the birds push away the heights of crowded buildings, and the clouds are visible once more. All I dream of is here, in amongst the concrete mass, yet so far removed. Urban sprawl conquered by nature’s sprawl. Lapping water carrying cares downstream. 13:00 and London returns. I am an oxymoron. Rsquo; The part that can’t resist a documentary about the evolution of mammals, and yet the other part who loves. I’m not the only oxymoron though – none of us are clear-cut – we all have many sides of ‘us’ that need to be expressed. Just over three years ago I wrote this. I thought I’d enjoy the anonymity of the crowd, but in reality London is the loneliest place I’ve ever lived. And so I’m moving on. And my beloved lunchtime spots. Hidden spots in London. I work in a very hectic, nois...

I’ve just returned from a week in France, visiting Avignon, Marseille and Paris. Whilst also doing the usual tourist things, I managed to visit some less touristy areas to get the real essence of French life. I’ve enjoyed taking my cameras out, just two this trip, my Lumix and my Pentax K-1000, with some film I haven’t tried before – Fuji Velvia. We visited the Père Lachaise graveyard in Paris, and apart from the obvious. I definitely want to do more of this. And, seeing from his various side projects th...
Hidden spots in London – Design Think
http://www.design-think.co.uk/post/57153877109/hidden-spots-in-london
Hidden spots in London. I work in a very hectic, noisy part of London. You could call it up-and-coming, gentrified, or you could call it obnoxiously loud, and overwhelming. And so I like to keep my lunch hours for myself; uninterrupted, undisturbed, and in as quiet a place as possible. While the main streets are busy as hell, there are some beautiful hidden places nearby where I can escape London. A little curiosity helps me escape into different world for another hour. A blog by Alix Land.

Friday, March 12, 2010. I've left this blog behind and started a new one over at Wordpress. Check it out www.coffeeandberries.wordpress.com. Monday, December 7, 2009. Sweet ‘Tater and Chili? Um, yes please! 160; That was one of the best dinners I have made in a looong time. Here’s how it all went down. Microwaved half of one sweet potato for six minutes. Put it in a bowl and topped with half a can (1 cup) of Amy’s Low Fat Medium Black Bean Chili. Added half a loaf of multi-grain pita bread. Today, I had...

History of the Left handed People
History of the Left Handed People. History of Left Handed People - sounds sinister! It is fairly safe to assume that those interested in the history of left handed people, will indeed be left handed people themselves. Right-handed people basically take their dominance for granted. However, it is a fascinating subject for all, because almost everybody knows a “leftie”, be it family member, close friend, work colleague, school pal, whoever. History of left handed people.
