Leigh Russell: January 2015
http://leighrussell.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, 25 January 2015. Helen M Hunt interviewed me recently about the process of judging short story competitions. Tell us about the short story competition you are judging at the moment. How many entries have you had to read, and how did you find the process? What appeals to you about the stories you think are worthy of winning, or being short listed? What sort of things are you looking for? Is there anything that really turns you off a story? What should people avoid doing? Enjoy the writing process ...
Leigh Russell: March 2015
http://leighrussell.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, 15 March 2015. Whats in a Name? In Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, John Proctor struggles with his conscience when asked to sign a false testimony denouncing his neighbour as a witch. With his own life at stake, he caves in to save himself. At the last minute changes his mind and refuses to sign to save his own life. When his inquisitor wants to know why, Proctor cries out, 'Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! How may I live without my name? There is nothing new i...
Leigh Russell: August 2014
http://leighrussell.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Thursday, 7 August 2014. Competition in the 21st Century. Margaret Sarlej, at the University of New South Wales, has devised a programme that enables computers to generate simple stories. In a statement that may cause some concern to authors, she claims "computers will be making interesting and meaningful contributions to literature within the decade", although she does go on to admit that "it's pretty unlikely a computer will ever produce works like War and Peace.". Once upon a time there lived a king, ...
Leigh Russell: Hunting for Facts
http://leighrussell.blogspot.com/2015/06/hunting-for-facts.html
Wednesday, 24 June 2015. Sir Tim Hunt would be a poor scientist if he did not focus on facts, and clearly he is talented in his field. He won a Nobel a Prize. In claiming that women are more likely to cry than men, he was stating a fact. Women are more likely to cry when emotional. So what? Men are more likely to resort to violence. Of the two, I know which reaction I deplore. I believe in democracy. But if we are to countenance mob rule by social media, let us proceed responsibly. 24 June 2015 at 07:37.

The Jagged Edge of Blogdom: Choosing Supports for Oils and Acrylics’
http://writewayze.blogspot.com/2009/11/choosing-supports-for-oils-and-acrylics.html
The Jagged Edge of Blogdom. We all procrastinate. The problem is, tomorrow is promised to no one. Monday, November 09, 2009. Choosing Supports for Oils and Acrylics’. Many artists like the idea of painting with 'something to say'; i.e. with a message. I try to, but I don't feel it's obligatory. All the same, your statements will be more effective, and physically longer lasting if you take care over choosing a support for the painting. So, what to paint on? What about painting with oils on other surfaces?
The Jagged Edge of Blogdom: Oil - The Queen of Mediums- 'Black Rock Sands'

The Jagged Edge of Blogdom. We all procrastinate. The problem is, tomorrow is promised to no one. Friday, November 06, 2009. Oil - The Queen of Mediums- 'Black Rock Sands'. Maybe it was time for me to feel immune to rushes of excitement over my art. After all, having explored many avenues in my painting shouldn't I relax; fall back on what I knew and paint mostly to amuse myself? How wrong could one be? I’ve seen the light… and I am having go at painting it. A Work in Progress:. Posted by John Walker.

The Jagged Edge of Blogdom: Tangled Trees
http://writewayze.blogspot.com/2012/07/blog-post.html
The Jagged Edge of Blogdom. We all procrastinate. The problem is, tomorrow is promised to no one. Tuesday, July 03, 2012. A pastel painting made on the spot. (My pad was A4 sized) This was in the woods at Dolgellau, (Pronounced Dolgethley I think.) on the slopes of Cader Idris; Snowdonia, North Wales. Not much in the way of varied tones, but I needed to sit down. Although, I do like the bright yellows and greens of the spring light on the mosses. Posted by John Walker. Mixed Pickles: It's been a long time but, brothers and sisters, here I go again!
http://rashdallsmixedpickles.blogspot.com/2010/06/its-been-long-time-but-brothers-and.html
It's been a long time but, brothers and sisters, here I go again! Listen, I was only. Idly flicking through the channels. I'm not even usually in on a Wednesday evening (calm down, burglars, the house is well guarded - the GLW has a black belt; uses it to cinch the waist of her black dress - the one she wears to KICK BURGLAR BUTT! One of the performers was something called a Pixie Lott. An unlikely Pixie (is it one of the Geldorfs? There are three unforgiveable rhymes in rock music. Their pointy bits pre...

Mixed Pickles: Too good to be forgotten?
http://rashdallsmixedpickles.blogspot.com/2011/06/too-good-to-be-forgotten.html
Too good to be forgotten? Of course, it's not only people I don't know approaching me that cause confusion (see previous post). There I was, walking down the Toll Road (the most salubrious location in Harrow), when I recognised a couple walking towards me. Hadn't seen them since 1976. Had been her flatmate's boyfriend for two years, had lived next door to her for a year, had been present on the day that he had moved into the road and met her for the first time. 27 June 2011 at 13:47. Ermmm I have just go...

Mixed Pickles: Genetic imperatives number two: spoon, pan; pan, spoon.
http://rashdallsmixedpickles.blogspot.com/2010/02/genetic-imperatives-number-two-spoon.html
Genetic imperatives number two: spoon, pan; pan, spoon. In this (slowly) continuing series. In which I attempt to explain to women how we men can't help it, we are just made that way,. I reach the tricky area of the kitchen and the man/spoon/pan interface. Women, on the other hand, make great cooks. That's not to say they necessarily are. Great cooks, but that they can make. Kind of fun.). Fran Hill @ Being Miss. Yes, yes, all this happens in my house. And the recipe thing - exactly! Ha ha, that drives m...
