Musings by Rod McQueen. Scots, wha hae wi’ Wallace bled. Middot; April 6, 2015. It may have escaped your attention, but in Canada this is National Tartan Day, launched in 2010 by the Harper government to celebrate the contribution of Scots in Canada. I’m only speaking for myself, not the two million Canadians of Scottish descent, but I have to say this is about as silly as it gets. I attended a speech on April 7 given in Toronto by Keith Brown, Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Investment and Cities ...

Musings by Rod McQueen. 29 Feb, 2016. A new face for The National. There’s a piece in the Globe and Mail this morning on the sports pages extolling the talents of a competitor, TSN’s Bob McKenzie, saying how solid his information always is. Setting aside the unusual pastime of a newspaper journalist complimenting a broadcaster, let’s focus on the praise. Solid. Shouldn’t every sportswriter have solid information? 22 Feb, 2016. Musings by Rod McQueen. Middot; October 6, 2014. Why can’t baseball players who win a big game or a best-of-something series devise some other celebration rather than dance in a circle with heads down and arms around each other’s shoulders? Whatever became of novelty songs? You know, like Bryan Hyland’s “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” or “The Little Nash Rambler” by The Playmates? What is it with Dracula and the many and various Vampires? December 14, 2014 at 12:12 pm. 8221; Louis, but...

Musings by Rod McQueen. The pursuit of possibilities. Middot; August 8, 2015. Some people say success in life is about inheriting good genes, getting an education, finding the right partner or just plain hard work. While all of those contain kernels of truth, life is nothing without possibilities. I attended a 100th birthday celebration today for Helen Oldham. Her son, Peter, was my friend while we were both growing up in Guelph. The brand was unavailable in Canada, but my father went to Chicago on a bus...

Musings by Rod McQueen. The road to immortality. Middot; July 14, 2015. One of the best definitions of immortality I’ve ever heard was told to me by Bill Mulholland, CEO of Bank of Montreal in the 1980s. “The question is, can you mass-produce? Do you want to achieve a self-perpetuating process, one that goes on after you walk out? The dining room revolution. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Your email address will not be published. Musings by Rod McQueen. Middot; July 27, 2015. The elegant obituary in today’s Globe. By Patrick Martin is a fine piece of work but I would pick a bone with the statement that Diefenbaker “told her how proud he was of her campaign” for leader. Such praise was unlikely from Dief who neither forgot nor forgave any enemy. After all, Dief revelled in describing her as “one of the finest women ever to walk the streets of Kingston.”. Musings by Rod McQueen. Middot; July 19, 2015. With the PanAm games more than half over, what will be the legacy beyond a few new buildings and some additional housing on the waterfront? Why not take this opportunity to change forever the traffic patterns that have been clogging Toronto by making permanent the temporary HOV lanes? Why not combine HOV and tolls? There’s at least one current private-sector proposal to build an HOV toll lane. During the Rob Ford administration another private-sect...
