Lesser Apricots

Tuesday, October 18, 2011. I have been a very bad blogger lately. The absent, not very engaged kind. I'm sorry about that. Life just went wildly busy as the school year began. I am starting to realize I can't work full-time, commute 12 hours a week, raise 3 children, manage a farm and household (with help from Dan), belong to 2 writing groups, write/revise my 2 1/2 novels AND blog about it all too. Lisa over at the fabulous Kicked, Cornered and Bitten. A surprising one. "Unknowable". A One Hit Wonder post.

http://lesserapricots.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 15, 2011. Your Weekly One Hit Wonder! Well, sort of weekly. Anyway, its a good one today. "It's Raining Men" by the Weather Girls. Not only is this 1984 hit one of those timeless tunes everybody (EVERYBODY! Knows, but this the best bad video ever! I especially love the trench coats. Links to this post. Labels: Its Raining Men. Thursday, September 8, 2011. Random Book Review: "My Life as a Fake" by Peter Carey. Here's what Amazon says about it:. But this description is all backstory.

Lesser Apricots: Random Book Review: "My Life as a Fake" by Peter Carey

http://lesserapricots.blogspot.com/2011/09/random-book-review-my-life-as-fake-by.html

Thursday, September 8, 2011. Random Book Review: "My Life as a Fake" by Peter Carey. Okay, I'll just say this straight off: I loved this book. It's a sort of creepy, semi-supernatural, literary mystery with roots in a historic Australian literary hoax. In short, a hard book to sum up, but one that is easy to appreciate. Here's what Amazon says about it:. But this description is all backstory. In a way, this novel was similar to "His illegal Self" (which I reviewed a while back. Labels: My Life as a Fake.

Lesser Apricots: What John Henry Means to Me

http://lesserapricots.blogspot.com/2011/07/what-john-henry-means-to-me.html

Friday, July 8, 2011. What John Henry Means to Me. John Henry is a folk character, the larger then life railroad man who challenged a steam drill to a race and won. Only to die of exhaustion in his moment of victory. Leadbelly sang about him. Here's Mississippi Fred McDowell:. Even in the most hopeful of versions, it's understood that in the future, steam drills will supplant spike drivers. So, then, is John Henry's life an example of futility? I don't think so. They took his hammer and wrapped it in gold.

Lesser Apricots: Random Book Review: "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" by Steig Larsson

http://lesserapricots.blogspot.com/2010/12/random-book-review.html

Tuesday, December 14, 2010. Random Book Review: "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" by Steig Larsson. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I'm always a little wary of tremendously popular books. Perhaps this is because the hype often snowballs way beyond what any ordinary novel could deliver. I never was one for peer pressure, spent my high school years railing against the popular kids with their banal yet popular tastes. So it came as no surprise that "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" disappointed me. A coupl...

Lesser Apricots: Unknowable

http://lesserapricots.blogspot.com/2010/09/unknowable.html

Friday, September 3, 2010. In Bali, this wild macaque has apparently adopted a stray kitten. Aside from the neat factor, (which is incredibly high) this sort of thing highlights the the unknowable nature of the natural world. Its hard to understand the motives of other humans, even those that are figments of the writerly imagination, but animals? This monkey has a whole inner world that we can not even begin to guess at. We, humans, imagine that if we could teach an animal (perhaps, a gibbon! I just read...

Except for Antigone: I wasted a year...

http://surviving-suze.blogspot.com/2010/06/i-wasted-year.html

Wednesday, June 23, 2010. I wasted a year. In 2008 I could have finished my WIP. I had just moved to the US to be with my boyfriend (now husband) and I was waiting on a green card. For a year. Yup, I spent a year surfing the internet, walking the dog and waiting for the next Netflix movie to arrive. * Sigh. And favorite agency websites. Maybe I just had to figure it out by myself to be able to move on. I have my eyes on the DFW writers’ conference in February next year. Is anyone else going? Melissa - me...

Except for Antigone: Confusing, Revision Hell

http://surviving-suze.blogspot.com/2010/03/confusing-revision-hell.html

Tuesday, March 2, 2010. Confusing, Revision Hell. I guess my question is this. Well, OK, I have two. Firstly – is it normal to revise like I am? I feel like I’m picking at a scab even when it hurts and I know I shouldn’t. And secondly – why am I switching to first person when I edit? Is it easier to write in the first person (and I’m just being lazy)? Or is this subconscious compulsion telling me that my whole novel should be written in the first person? Does anyone out there have any advice for me?

The Lesser Arcana

Monday, June 8, 2009. 12 of Swords - the Professor. Given the general public's distrust of genetic modification in particular and university agriculture in general, in his more cynical moments the Professor likes to joke that his machete handles monkeywrenchers as well as weeds. Deep down, though, he's afraid for all the good he's trying to do the world that he might actually have to use it that way someday. Saturday, May 23, 2009. 12 of Cups - the Bartender. A buck a drink.
