Tribalism in Dog Training: One Trainer’s Perspective. Listening to Your Heart →. February 21, 2012 · 5:47 pm. I failed my dog this weekend. That’s not a very cheerful way to start a blog post, and I’m afraid this post doesn’t paint me in a very positive light. However, I think the topic is important enough to write about even if I do find the situation quite embarrassing. So without further comment, here’s what happened. Dobby at a rally trial. Pure joy! After our second of three working sessions, I felt...

Advocating for the Anxious Dog →. November 18, 2011 · 2:42 pm. As a professional dog behavior consultant, I often talk to people who are struggling and frustrated. They often share facts with me that make me cringe, whether it be details about the e-collar they’ve been using to shock their fearful dog every time he growls or the fact that they’ve been rubbing their anxious dog’s nose in his urine each time he marks while yelling “no” at him. I believe that there is more positive than negative in the world.

Advocating for the Anxious Dog. The Best Teachers →. January 24, 2012 · 11:33 pm. Tribalism in Dog Training: One Trainer’s Perspective. There’s been a lot of hate speech about other dog trainers (especially those who use traditional techniques) on various email lists lately, so I thought I would share my personal philosophy and recent experiences as another perspective. Offers pet dog and competition classes, the majority of my personal time is spent working with dogs who have serious behavior issues.

Everybody is a Genius. I Believe →. October 20, 2011 · 6:44 pm. To the person who abandoned your elderly Lab in Rochester two months ago;. I wanted to let you know what happened to your dog. Was found as a stray. I can’t imagine he ran away. His hips didn’t work so well anymore. Spent two weeks at the pound, lying in his own feces on the cold concrete. He was sad, scared, and very confused. When it became clear that you weren’t coming for him, I took your dog. Home I bathed him and took him to the vet.

Luna's Learning Life: June 2011
http://lunastraininglevels.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, June 16, 2011. Another session done tonight. Repeated what we did yesterday, and added things like more invasive eye-handling (pulling upper- and lower eyelid) and opening her mouth. It was really cute to see her figuring out how to relax her mouth. Tomorrow I want to add a paper towel touching her face, then her eyes, then progress to being able to clean her eyes with a wet paper towel without her feeling uncomfortable. Wednesday, June 15, 2011. Other eye, wait for eye to relax, click, treat.

Luna's Learning Life: November 2010
http://lunastraininglevels.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, November 27, 2010. Training Log for Nov 27. This morning we worked on Sit, Stand, Down at a distance, and Front on the street in front of the house. This afternoon we took the dummybag to the driest field we have close by, as mud and consequently a very hard to clean black dog is not my idea of fun. We live on clay here, and wet clay sucks. ;-). 8217;-face and she does a perky Sit with no more yawning or looking away. Whoohoo! With that, we quit the dummy retrieves and I tossed her ball a few t...

Sunday, January 8, 2012. It'sYerChoice – Tugging and the Food Bowl, Part 3. Attempt #1: Luna sits on the doormat. I put her food in her dish. I put the dish on the counter. I have the tug and go to Luna on the doormat. I slap the tug on the ground while saying ‘’Geddit! 8221; Luna pounces on the tug, then grabs it and starts tugging very strongly. Whahoo! I tug her into the kitchen, grab her dish off the counter, move to her eating spot in the kitchen and put the dish down – she lets go of the tug! Also,...

Luna's Learning Life: September 2010
http://lunastraininglevels.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 30, 2010. Hello and a plan. OK, my first blog post here. Luna and I will not be working the entire Levels program for another two weeks due to an injury to Luna’s knee. I want her to make a full recovery, so we will be starting the Levels as of Friday, October 15th. For two weeks following October 15th, we will be working mostly on Zen, Down and Down Stay, Sit and Sit Stay, Handling, and Watch. So, that’s our plan! At this moment she gets 300-350 grams of kibble a day, and this is als...

Luna's Learning Life: ... And a promise
http://lunastraininglevels.blogspot.com/2012/01/and-promise.html
Sunday, January 1, 2012. I have to make a promise to Luna. WHY is it perfectly OK for people to punish their dogs in public (for things that aren't even the dog's fault), but rewarding them for a job well done is seen as bribery, spoiling the dog, weakness, and a sign of an untrained dog? So, this is my promise;. Whenever I catch myself being a bully, whenever I catch myself being reactive, I will immediately stop, re-teach what I want you to do, and then I will ASK you to do it and PAY you for doing it!

March 1, 2013 · 4:14 pm. Happy Gotcha Day, Layla! December 22, 2012 · 4:24 pm. Missing Layla: the dangers of xylitol poisoning. Crossposted from my other blog. Layla was lucky. Last night, she got into a pack of gum containing xylitol, an artificial sweetener. Had I not caught her eating the pack and recognized the danger, things may have turned out very differently. My house might have been empty forever. Just the thought of losing her feels like a physical blow. Even a small bit of xylitol can cause da...
