A Librarian Less Ordinary

Thursday, March 12, 2015. I missed the boat (ahem, I mean, pirate ship) in September for International Talk Like a Pirate Day. And after helping several students locate swashbuckling books in the library, I was inspired to have an impromptu Pirate Day with first grade. Saying they "loved it" would be the overstatement of the century. How does one host an impromptu Pirate Day, you ask? Well, it's simple. First, gather together the following:. Black, long-sleeved shirt. Black pants or skirt. Well, matey, m...

A Librarian Less Ordinary: December 2014

http://www.lessordinarylibrarian.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 11, 2014. Layers of the Earth Clay Models. Do you remember studying the layers of the earth when you were in elementary school? Yep, me neither. If I had made a clay model of the earth that was later cut open to expose the layers, that might be a different story. Before this project even began, I bought (lots) of Crayola Model Magic. I then divided the clay into individual bags, one for each student. I also included handouts for all of the tables and made my sample earth model:. Sadly,...

A Librarian Less Ordinary: April 2014

http://www.lessordinarylibrarian.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 28, 2014. It's been an insane month of loosing my mother-in-law, driving cross-country, signing a new contract for the coming school year and welcoming my husband home after being on the road for five weeks. Sigh. Needless to say, I have been neglecting this here blog. So, to get back into it, I thought I would post an overview of the coolest type of poetry I have ever seen! Austin Kleon, the author of Newspaper Blackout. As well as a number of other awesome art-inspiring titles.

Thursday, July 31, 2014. Lois Ehlert's "Color Zoo" Flannel Set. This project has been a long time coming. And, boy, I'm glad I finally did it. First, I love Lois Ehlert. Has a wonderful (very kid-friendly) interview with Ms. Ehlert, if you're interested in doing an author study. She has so many amazing, classic books and many of them can be incorporated into a ton. Has compiled, it's great! Or, how about an author interview? Check out the Reading Rockets. And now, on to the fun stuff. I was never much fo...

Saturday, February 28, 2015. Red {beet, kale, cucumber, orange}. Thursday, February 26, 2015. And then it snowed again. I have really enjoyed being at home today with a fire going, and I'm about to go out and sled with Ruby, but I needed to see some greens, some raspberry pickers, leaves on the trees. Thursday, February 19, 2015. My dearest Universe. Please stop snowing and warm up. The pipes are freezing, and the children won't stop eating all the food. Also vomiting. Sunday, February 08, 2015.

Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Sunday, October 26, 2014. Monday, October 20, 2014. I think I love this tree as much as I love our house. I do think of it as the children's spiritual home. Certainly, it was the house Little John was most interested in when we came to visit this house a few years ago. Ruby and Ella have been singing with the children's choir at church, and this past Sunday they had their first performance. This is her response when the whole congregation gave them a standing ovation.

Monday, March 23, 2015. Yesterday she said, "Mama, I've learned something about myself. I'm a little bit boy." I like this, but to her being a little bit boy means that she likes dinosaurs, dirt, and playing with boys who don't go for a lot of drama. Sunday, March 15, 2015. Dandelion, mango, cucumber, lime. How do I print? Friday, November 10, 2017. The Life in Pieces Bingo episode: Get your printable family BINGO cards! TV is my guilty pleasure. It's usually on in the background while I'm working, so it can't be anything that I really have to focus on. One of my newest favorites is Life in Pieces on CBS. I've been watching past seasons on Hulu and it is laugh out loud funny. Each episodes has 4 mini-episodes that are just a few minutes long. I instantly thought of my DIY fill in the blank Bingo card. My addition to Illustration Friday's "Garden" topic this week. Most of us recognize the humble little pansy flower. They come in a variety of colors and add some gorgeous speckles of contrast to our gardens. But there's actually a lot more to know about pansies, much of which goes back centuries and has the potential to tickle your inspiration. Did you know that you can actually eat pansy flowers? No matter what pansies mean to you. whether you keep them in your garden, eat them off the side of your ...
