July 24, 2009 by katherine. A long overdue follow-up to the previous post! I spent two nights last month meditating at Hosen-ji. A Zen temple located near Kyoto with my brother Alex and my boyfriend James. I studied Buddhism in college and have spent a lot of time visiting temples as a tourist, so I have long wanted a chance to try something a little bit more in-depth. This is the daily schedule of Hosen-ji. And though it may seem strict, there is actually a lot more free time than you might expect.

The performers were mostly older men; some played with their eyes closed, and you could imagine that they had been playing for decades. I love listening to. Performances, and the surprise concert was such a nice and welcome interruption to what would have otherwise been a relatively routine evening. It was such a beautiful Toyama moment.
