Let's Talk About...MEH: a bit of religion

http://www.letstalkaboutmeh.blogspot.com/2009/05/bit-of-religion.html

Let's Talk About.MEH. A bit of religion. I haven’t talked a whole lot about the religious conflict in the Spanish Netherlands, or at least not about how it started, so I thought I’d go into that a bit, especially because it ties in pretty nicely with at least Mia. For a background on religious matters in the Low Countries, I found it helpful to look at Hendrick Willem van Loon’s book. The Fall of the Dutch Republic. Which seems to be more accurately the. Rise and Fall of the Dutch Republic.

Let's Talk About...MEH: Charles Quint

http://www.letstalkaboutmeh.blogspot.com/2009/04/charles-quint.html

Let's Talk About.MEH. Spain ruled the Low Countries, under Charles. The ruler of Spain. The Netherlands, Austria, Germany, and America. Because of the immense amounts of territory under his control, he was widely considered the most powerful man in Europe. Fun fact. By the time he was 20, in 1520, Charles V ruled the largest collection of European land since Charlemagne over 700 years earlier. He had been born in Flanders, spoke French, and became the Duke of Burgundy as a child.

Let's Talk About...MEH: But...

http://www.letstalkaboutmeh.blogspot.com/2009/04/but.html

Let's Talk About.MEH. Unfortunately, within three years it was apparent that the religious truce would not hold. The differences between the agrarian, Roman Catholic south and the commercial-industrial, Calvinist-dominated north were too great to coexist harmoniously. Not helping matters was the fact that the Spanish king had chosen as his representative Alessandro Farnese (later the duke of Parma), who was well known for his diplomatic and military skills. The problem? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Let's Talk About...MEH: to compromise or not to compromise?

http://www.letstalkaboutmeh.blogspot.com/2009/05/to-compromise-or-not-to-compromise.html

Let's Talk About.MEH. To compromise or not to compromise? Back to that point I made earlier. Or at least hinted at, that a compromise was pretty much impossible between the Catholic and Protestant factions in the Spanish Netherlands? Well, van Loon has a bit to say about that. “For half a century, at least, a compromise seemed quite possible.” So why wasn’t it? May 26, 2009 at 1:22 AM. A response of sorts here. theMEHness :: modern european history: Catholic and Irish?

http://themehness.blogspot.com/2009/05/catholic-and-irish.html

May 13, 2009. If so, you'd have some problems in 18th century Ireland. At this time, around 3/4th of Irish people were Catholic, despite attempts on the behalf of England to convert them to Protestantism. These attemps first took the form of the establishment of the Church of Ireland. But after disappointing results, the mother country turned to force. In the 18th century, if you were Catholic in Ireland and under the rule of England, you could not:. Hold office or practice law. Go abroad to study. Sourc...

May 13, 2009. By the late 18th century, you had some more freedoms. Vote at parliamentary elections. Bask in your newfound freedoms for a moment. Done? You still could not:. Sit in parliament (I believe this means be a member of, not actually sit. Though I could be wrong). Be a colonel in the army. Be a captain in the navy. Be a minister in the government. Hold anything higher than a junior office in the civil government. Roberts Rinehart Publishers. Niwot, Colorado. 1995. This entry feeds into this.

January 29, 2009. The Pleasure of Hating (Other Nations). The pleasure of hating.makes patriotism an excuse for carrying fire, pestilence, and famine into other lands." -William Hazlitt, "On the Pleasure of Hating". I often like nothing better than finding a connection between classes. In this case, the above quote arose from a personal essay that Non-Fiction was assigned to read. It automatically made me think about the making of nations, as discussed in Chapter 21 of Western Civilizations. As I was rea...

theMEHness :: modern european history: A Letter (?) on Multiraciality

http://themehness.blogspot.com/2009/04/letter-on-multiraciality.html

April 26, 2009. Dear Ms. Cogito et Histoire de la Folie,. Tradition will be maintained, but culture individually innovated.". The one point which I take issue with is this. You wrote that, "In fact, that racially plural, digital face does not represent the people of the future; we're here right now, and guess what? We've always been here." While I agree that "We are here right now," is true, stating that multiraciality is not so much for the future. A few days after Mildred Loving had died. I guess a...

May 25, 2009. Responding to Andra's post. In your post, you comment that, "However, the potato famine was not created by the British, which means that the Irish left the homeland due to a natural disaster, if I may call it that, rather than because of their oppression by the British." You also inquire as to whether there might be a trend in people emigrating from their homes because of oppressive occupations. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Let's Talk About.MEH. theMEHness :: modern european history: How Ireland became Ireland

http://themehness.blogspot.com/2009/05/how-ireland-became-ireland.html

May 25, 2009. How Ireland became Ireland. Kind of the last bit to tack onto the previous post. Or in English, Ireland) in the 1930's, when Fianna Fáil. Who had opposed the treaty, also known as the Soldiers of Destiny) came into power. It is known as the Republican Party and is currently in power as well. Ireland remained neutral during WWII, though it assisted the Allies minimally. It declared itself a republic in 1949. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Let's Talk About.MEH. Mental Health Survival TIps

Mental Health Survival TIps. Survival of the Fittest? Having a mental illness is a challenge that most of us would not wish upon anyone else. There are days that are harder than others and sometimes we do feel like giving up. I guess I am just a perpetual optimist. Even in my darkest moments I never lose that tiny bit of hope that keeps me from totally giving up. That light still is shining although sometimes I have to strain to see it. I like to remember this saying:. Links to this post. The roller coas...
