Letters from a Luddite: What I learned in 31 days off-line

http://www.lettersfromaluddite.blogspot.com/2012/02/what-i-learned-in-31-days-off-line.html

Letters from a Luddite. What I learned in 31 days off-line. There is something about the immediacy, the therapeutic clickity-clack of the typewriter that allows for a different kind of writing. The kind that spills from the heart rather than the head. The kind that’s intended for a single, known reader than an large, unknown audience. Stepping off-line for 31 days got my hands moving, disciplined me to write every single day with or without a four-month-old and a two-year-old clambering about my knees.

Google makes us stupid…or does it? Posted by J.Ticona. Last week my boyfriend Dan and I were walking our. Gifted puppy and something strange (or maybe not so strange) happened. Dan had a particularly hectic week managing his work from our home, which involves A LOT of phone calls, and was ready to “unplug” from the office and run around with our dog. He took his Blackberry out of his pocket and was about to hand it off to me, when he realized. He didn’t know how to turn it off. How then, do people take t...

Newer posts →. Posted by J.Ticona. Welcome to my The Off Button. This blog will include my thoughts on various tech-related topics, but also a few self-experiments that (I hope) will give me a better understanding of what it’s like to live in our connected, hyper-linked, social networked, just-in-time world without access to the things we’ve come to depend on. Restricting my e-mail and internet access. Taking trips without GPS. Only using landline phones. Not paying any bills online. Newer posts →.

Is “nomophobia” real? 8220;Addicted” to our devices? The Machine in the White House: Obama’s techno-arrogance. Posted by J.Ticona. I’ve been noticing that, in the run-up to next month’s election, the candidates haven’t been talking about technology as much as they did during the last time around. While Obama kept up the rhetorical support for science and technology throughout his tenure, he’s been suffering attacks for his support of Solyndra. In a recent nationwide poll. Americans ranked technology comp...

Finding the road home (without GPS! The Machine in the White House: Obama’s techno-arrogance →. Is “nomophobia” real? Posted by J.Ticona. The LA Times recently reported that a California addiction treatment center has begun treating its clients for “nomophobia” or “no-mobile-phone phobia.” Someone who is nomophobic might go to great lengths to avoid being without their cell phone, such that their relationships, health, and work deteriorate as a result. As a sociologist, the definition of a new phobia by ...

Google makes us stupid…or does it? Is “nomophobia” real? Finding the road home (without GPS! Posted by J.Ticona. When I started this blog I had an idea that, on my annual road trip back home to upstate NY, I would attempt to drive the 487 miles without using any GPS technology. I would look at maps, plan my route, and drive without any idea of my estimated time of arrival and then write about it here. My Dad, while driving me around as a child would ask me questions like, “Julia, which way is North?

When I moved down here to Florida I joked that I rapid aged when I crossed the border. Letters From America

Wednesday, November 13, 2013. I had moved here to explore my writing opportunities and it would be wrong to ignore one thrown in my face. This inner conversation boosted my confidence that she wouldn't hit me with her sign if I approached her so I set off around the building to see if she still stood on the corner. I adopted an air of nonchalance, as if I were just walking around. It was my disguise. I said as she stared at me, never letting the sign down. "Is that an abortion provider? So I left her to ...
