New Food Mondays: Hugh's Overnight Home Cured Bacon Chops
http://newfoodmondays.blogspot.com/2011/07/hughs-overnight-home-cured-bacon-chops.html
Reports and bad photographs from a year of trying to cook more adventurously. Monday, 11 July 2011. Hugh's Overnight Home Cured Bacon Chops. Carrots, butternut squash and potatoes. Salt, pepper, sugar, juniper berries and bay leaves. This is the first recipe in a while that I got properly excited about and it turned out to be one of the best yet. This has to go down as one of the tastiest and most satisfying meals I've done so far, with the tangy, salty pork being perfectly complimented by the sweet mash...

New Food Mondays: Jamie's Spinach and Feta Filo Pie
http://newfoodmondays.blogspot.com/2011/08/jamies-spinach-and-feta-filo-pie.html
Reports and bad photographs from a year of trying to cook more adventurously. Monday, 8 August 2011. Jamie's Spinach and Feta Filo Pie. Cherry tomatoes and cucumber. This week's New Food Monday starts (as is becoming traditional) with me blaming our local supermarket for not having a key ingredient. This week it was filo pastry, and I have to admit I had but low expectations for the puff pastry we substituted, after rejecting Plan A (throw tomatoes at staff). For a veggie recipe, it wasn't cheap - coming...

New Food Mondays: Jamie's Sticky Pan-Fried Scallops (and Chocolate Brownies)
http://newfoodmondays.blogspot.com/2011/11/jamies-sticky-pan-fried-scallops-and.html
Reports and bad photographs from a year of trying to cook more adventurously. Monday, 14 November 2011. Jamie's Sticky Pan-Fried Scallops (and Chocolate Brownies). Rice, spring onions and eggs. A good chocolate brownie recipe is closely-guarded and much envied. While that was in the oven I could get started on the rest of the meal - covering the scallops in oil, lemon zest and five-spice, before frying with honey, chopped chilli and a little garlic. Carbs were provided by boiling some rice and stirring i...

New Food Mondays: What?
http://newfoodmondays.blogspot.com/p/what.html
Reports and bad photographs from a year of trying to cook more adventurously. Is an attempt to cook and eat more adventurously during 2011, as well as make better use of the cookbooks lovingly given us for Christmas. Each Monday either Chris or Helen (see below) will create a meal following a recipe we've never tried before and report back with comments on how easy, tasty or impressive (or otherwise) it turns out. With a bit of luck this will mean that we:. Our chef's library includes:. Hughs Rabbit and ...

New Food Mondays: Hugh's Beetroot & Cumin Soup with Stilton & Leek Tart
http://newfoodmondays.blogspot.com/2011/03/hughs-beetroot-cumin-soup-with-stilton.html
Reports and bad photographs from a year of trying to cook more adventurously. Monday, 14 March 2011. Hugh's Beetroot and Cumin Soup with Stilton and Leek Tart. So for my first Veggie Lent, I thought I'd go ambitious - I've never cooked a quiche from scratch and I've only ever cooked with beetroot once before. Admittedly, I did cheat and use pre-rolled pastry, but it was still quite a faff and took two hours from start to finish. To this I added 100g of Stilton, two eggs, two egg yolks and an artery-stopp...

New Food Mondays: Jamie's Chicken Skewers with Satay Sauce and Fiery Noodle Salad
http://newfoodmondays.blogspot.com/2011/10/jamies-chicken-skewers-with-satay-sauce.html
Reports and bad photographs from a year of trying to cook more adventurously. Monday, 17 October 2011. Jamie's Chicken Skewers with Satay Sauce and Fiery Noodle Salad. Peanut butter and cashew nuts. Coriander, lime, chilli, soy sauce, ginger. They say you shouldn't go shopping when you're hungry. This week I had little choice, dinner being delayed by some super-manly exercise. First I made the satay sauce (hello again, my blender friend) - coriander, chilli, garlic, soy, ginger, lime juice. In fact I lov...

New Food Mondays: Delia's Crisp Roast Duck with Confit of Sour Cherries
http://newfoodmondays.blogspot.com/2011/02/delias-crisp-roast-duck-with-confit-of.html
Reports and bad photographs from a year of trying to cook more adventurously. Monday, 7 February 2011. Delia's Crisp Roast Duck with Confit of Sour Cherries. This is a recipe I'd been meaning to try for a few weeks but never managed the necessary preparation - soaking the cherries in wine for 24 hours and drying the duck legs to achieve the desired crispy skin. The only change I'd make would be increasing the volume of sauce, or reducing it a little less to make sure there was more to go around. Mel Narr...

New Food Mondays: Jamie's Cauliflower and Squash Rogan Josh
http://newfoodmondays.blogspot.com/2011/03/jamies-cauliflower-and-squash-rogan.html
Reports and bad photographs from a year of trying to cook more adventurously. Monday, 21 March 2011. Jamie's Cauliflower and Squash Rogan Josh. Chapattis, rice, yogurt. Week two of Veggie Lent and one of the less exciting-looking recipes. No crazy ingredients - in fact nothing I hadn't already added to a meat curry before. I wasn't convinced that this would be particularly memorable. Thankfully by this point the veggies were looking less raw and taking up a little less space so I could chuck in some spin...

New Food Mondays: Hugh's Stuffed Butternut Squash
http://newfoodmondays.blogspot.com/2011/11/hughs-stuffed-butternut-squash.html
Reports and bad photographs from a year of trying to cook more adventurously. Monday, 28 November 2011. Hugh's Stuffed Butternut Squash. I am standing in Tesco the day before cooking for a vegetarian friend trying to understand how meals are structured without meat at the centre. We have squash, yes, and it's full of good things, but what goes on the side? Thankfully the recipe was simplicity itself. Wintery nights in setting the world to rights. New Food Mondays: Recipes of the Year 2011!
http://newfoodmondays.blogspot.com/2011/12/recipes-of-year-2011.html
Reports and bad photographs from a year of trying to cook more adventurously. Monday, 26 December 2011. Recipes of the Year 2011! So, much to the disappointment of our guests, we come to the end of the year of New Food. Has it been a success? Most definitely - we've learned a load of new recipes (at least some of which we have already reused), caught up with friends old and new, and found an excuse to drink lots of wine on a Monday night. What's not to like? Ingredient of the year. Do you have to ask?
