Life as a Small-town Literacy Sherpa. Part One: My Día de los Niños Experience. So when Día offered mini-grants to celebrate their 20th anniversary, I went for it. My library system has never celebrated Día de los Niños before this year, and in fact, we’ve really only ever done one other big program targeting Latino families. I wanted to see us step up and show our commitment to this community by investing in a festival to blow everyone’s minds. Want is not the best way to go. When it comes to storytime,...

Life as a Small-town Literacy Sherpa. Newer posts →. Totes and Quotes: a craft to go with any book club. This year, our library system participated in the Big Read and our county-wide book selection was To Kill a Mockingbird. We end the program this week and with a wide variety of programs ranging from a jazz concert to movie and documentary showings, we’ve had some great participation from our patrons and communities. I hosted three programs at my two branches:. A showing of the documentary. Printed ima...

Life as a Small-town Literacy Sherpa. Life-Sized Plants vs. Zombies. Life-Sized Plants vs. Zombies. So here’s the layout of the room. Step one: Set up the playing area. You need three rows on each side. The back row is for your catapults, the middle is for offense, and the front is for defense. I used painter’s tape to make my rows. I made some catapults by taping ladles to yard sticks. Jealous? The offensive line did nothing but throw and kick balls to the other side. Two: Also make it known that when y...

Life as a Small-town Literacy Sherpa. Life-Sized Plants vs. Zombies. Baby Storytimes for the Baby-Impaired →. This has to be my favorite program so far this year! Here’s what I used:. My husband as a volunteer to help me set-up. I really do think you need two people. With both of us working on it, it took 3 hours. 35 6 ft. sections of pipe insulation, which cost $1 each. Painter’s tape to hold it down. 7 Little buckets from the dollar store. 6 kickboards, also from the dollar store. Stark Tower (my fav!

Close to dying, but I had some bruises and absolutely no gratitude from the boy’ s mother who informed mine that I almost drowned her son. Bryce Don't Play: November 2014
http://brycedontplay.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Story Behind My Blog's Name. Wednesday, November 19, 2014. The Shy Librarian's Guide to Presenting. My readership varies. Theres friends, family, librarian colleagues that I know and that I dont know. If youll indulge me this one, Im gonna speak directly to one particular group this time: those of you who have thought about presenting, but thinking about actually doing it is just one big NOPE. And everyone, I have a confession: I used to be really pretty shy. No, really. Im a hustler homie. Last week I w...

Story Behind My Blog's Name. Thursday, May 07, 2015. Ask Away #2: Field Trips are an Advocacy Tool. So I'm sure I'll talk about it more sometime (yeah, right, just like I'll catch up on my programming posts sometime, right? I'm The Worst), but for now I'll just say I couldn't ask for a better group of colleagues to come together, reflect on current practice, and tackle scenario-based questions for my inaugural go at Iron Fist: The Class. First off, I've been thinking a lot about advocacy lately, due in n...

The idea behind Thrive Thursday is to compile great ideas from children's librarians who work with school age kids. It was dreamed up by Lisa Shaia of Thrive After Three. Currently assisting in this endeavor will be Meg. And myself. Every month a different blogger hosts the roundup and shares posts about programs and other school age library awesomeness. Storytime … and all that entails. Who do I think I am, anyway? Monkey see, monkey…Do this storytime! July 19, 2015. Monkeys. Mischievous but sweet. Exotic yet familiar. Typically they have long tails and live in trees but I have been known to throw gorillas and other apes into the theme, too. One banana, two banana,. Three banana, four…. Even though I ate them all. I still want more! This counting book is really funny, of course, because Barnett and Cornell were in charge! Time to count the monkeys! This ...

Storytime … and all that entails. Who do I think I am, anyway? How Ya Gonna Keep ’em Down on the Farm Storytime. April 16, 2015. Oh, the farm. You and your animals have been so good to me over the years – and you have provided endless entertainment for the kids in my storytimes. Let’s never break up. Horses, donkeys, cows that moo,. Chickens, kittens, piglets too,. Fish that swim down in the pond,. Ducklings quacking all day long. All these animals you can see. If you go to the farm with me. He rides aro...

Story Behind My Blog's Name. Monday, April 13, 2015. After School Book Exploration: A STEM Shared Experience. This weekend I was lucky to attend The Wisconsin After School Association Conference. If you've never been, the WAA Annual Conference is a great place to connect with other community members statewide who work with youth. I learned about epigenetics, which is completely fascinating. That you can adapt to library programming, surely. I also got to present at one of the session times! When we’...

The second Monday of every month is Monday Funday at one of our branches, where we provide a special evening program for elementary-age kids. LibrariAnnabelle's Blog | Ramona Quimby is my hero
Ramona Quimby is my hero. Kids Club Wednesday, June 23. June 24, 2016. Because school is out – and most of us have survived so far – we’ve started a new program called Kids Club (put the apostrophe where ye may), in which from 2 – 3 pm Tuesday – Thursday we have a program full of whatevers (games, STEAM, etc.) for 6 – 12 year-olds. I could have been brainy, I could have been sciency, but nope, we made fortune tellers. Because… why not? About their history; fascinating! For little boys. A three? In What&#...
