LIDAR" stands for "light detection and ranging". It is the optical equivalent of radar. A lidar instrument mounted on an aircraft is able to scan the ground, and create a very accurate three dimensional map. It also measures the height of any objects on the ground. There are many advantages to using lidar data to create three dimensional maps. Lidar is able to penetrate vegetation, meaning that vegetation can be removed from the 3D map, exposing the underlying terrain features.
