Thursday, June 18, 2015. Centered and Sane: An Alternate Universe. The small university town of Lecce captured my heart. My first six months after leaving my job were focused on an Italian adventure that was designed to shift my attention away from my previous work life. I immersed myself for four months in learning a bit of Italian, planning my adventure, and figuring out the art I would do while in my Assisi residency. Then, Bellisimo! Every day I see gracious yogis opening up around me. The not so obv...

Wednesday, April 29, 2015. The Value of Art. Origins of Western Art. Gallery of the Lions in Chauvet, France from 38,000 years ago. 30,000 to 38,000 years ago, humans entered a series of caves in what is today southern France and, using charcoal and ochre, painted multitudes of animals of that era. It is believed that the art was created for use in rituals since the caves, rediscovered on December 24, 1994, give no evidence of occupation and are not suitable for living. Sunday, June 22, 2014. Self-Portrait In the Moment. Opening Reception for In the Moment. At Maude Kerns Art Center. I was one of ten artists who had photos ready in time for the invitation card to be printed, whew! The show opened on Friday, May 16, 2014. Since it was two weeks before the final day at my university job, I was in a celebrative mood. I purposely wore a red shirt and "crazy creative leggings.". I welcomed my first guests to Maude Kerns Art Center:. Puppeteer Bob Kamenski and his dog. Rather...

Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Uncertain Journey of Transformation. How does one step out of the work harness and create a new way of being? That’s the uncertain journey I began when I left my job at the University of Oregon at the end of May. Some of the markers on the first stage of the journey have been Euphoric Landing, Spinning in a Cyclotron, and Not in Kansas Anymore. Who cares if there's a water pipe? Poster for art show at Sweet Earth Vineyards. Mine is the upper left image. By the third week I was tru...

Sunday, August 31, 2014. Awesome Open Studio Artists. Sand Poland is both a painter and an assemblage artist. Her current work with masks bridges these approaches and showcases her incredible use of line drawing and collage, along with a refined sense of social commentary. Janet Baker - An incidence of which I know nothing. Janet Baker - This much I know is true. Janet Baker - Almost like something I once heard. Paula Lantz is a portrait and abstract collage artist with a "painterly" style that reveals h...

Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Unveiling Our Maiden Migration. I discovered this incredible book of maps at the home of a friend. It is an awesome source of endless inspiration. I had already spent two months in preparation and still I did not know what I would be putting on the configuration of boards that will represent our human migration from Ethiopia into Southwest Asia. Two months of preparation? Maps reveal the ever-changing human perception of the world. They are a very old form of art. What if I used a...

Sunday, December 7, 2014. Green Heart of Italy. I began and ended my two-month Italian adventure in the center of the country – Tuscany and Umbria. Particularly in Umbria, I found concern for preserving and restoring the natural environment which is beautiful and productive. Regional parks have been set aside and local groups have formed to mitigate destruction and contamination. Orvieto - Tuscan Hill Town. Steep cliffs surround Orvieto. The fertile Tuscan countryside below Orvieto. As elsewhere in Italy...

Saturday, November 22, 2014. The island of Sicily in southern Italy has a sad history. Just about everybody in the Mediterranean region has invaded and dominated the island for a while: Phoenicians (present-day Lebanon), Greeks, Corinthians (present-day Tunisia), Romans, Normans, North Africans, Arabs, Byzantines, Lombards, Spanish. While some invaders were brutal, others brought tolerance and respect. Agrigento – Valley of the Temples. In 800 BC, the gods were real and required constant attention. Were ...

Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Historic Hill Town of Assisi, Italy. I am excited to announce that I will be doing my first artist residency in Assisi, Italy during the month of October. Arte Studio Ginestrelle is located in Regional Park of Mount Subasio, a UNESCO Heritage Site in Umbria, the “green heart of Italy.” Assisi is the birthplace of St. Francis, founder of the Franciscan order. Assisi contains famous frescos by Giotto and Cimabue. Map of Italy Showing Location of Assisi. What is an artist residency?
