Live from Guilford Ave.: June 2010

Monday, June 14, 2010. Out of the Frying Pan and Back Into the Frying Pan (or, a Whole Lot of Heat). In Baltimore. Like, really hot. Like, sticky, sweaty, dehydrating-just-by-sitting-on-the-front-porch hot. Thankfully, we volunteers of the Arrupe House on Guilford Ave. have been saved from the lugubrious, energy-draining clutches of the Earth’s inevitable approach toward the Sun; our air-conditioning has been fixed! You couldn’t have offered anything more substantial? Picture a boisterous, slightly drunk...

Live from Guilford Ave.: The Peace Movement
http://livefromguilfordave.blogspot.com/2010/05/peace-movement.html
Wednesday, May 19, 2010. Why is it called the Peace Movement. Why does peace need to move. I think we need it here, so it should stay here. All the things we need- like Peace. Like Progression and Equality,. Why do we call them movements. It makes it sound like they arrived here a time ago, helped fix our situation, and in a short while, they'll head on down the road. We need them- we've always needed them- shouldn't we ask them to stay. So then maybe they'd all just move away. View my complete profile.

Wednesday, April 28, 2010. They're actually DOING something! And that's what I liked best about the day: Community. It was pretty cool to see the number of different social groups, i.e. elected officials, fraternities, my JVC. You would have immediately felt welcome and at home. So yes, it was one day, and maybe trash will blow right back onto the street tomorrow. But, as the man said, "They're actually DOING something! And that has to count for something. Click here. RECORDERS were in it! The first stop...

Live from Guilford Ave.: August 2009

Sunday, August 30, 2009. Friday night was the epitome of thrift. The roomies and I had planned to go to the Orioles game, not so much that we are diehard fans of the O's (though they could use all they help they can get), but because tickets were only 6 doll. Irregardless, the Orioles beat the Indians by some score that I don't remember, and we had a wonderful time with all 17 of Baltimore's fans. Hopefully you had a weekend of equal or greater value, and perhaps I would like to hear about it! So here we...

Live from Guilford Ave.: September 2009

Monday, September 28, 2009. How do you live on $85 a month? Well my friend, it’s not that I don’t want to get paid…I do. I like money. It’s nice. It lets me buy food and helps fix my bike and grants me access to places. But as I’ve been learning during my first month at work, it isn’t the be-all end-all of motivation techniques for me. I've learned that there's something great that is motivating me to be here in Baltimore, and though I can't quite name it, it sure as heck ain't cash. What look I what fun!

Live from Guilford Ave.: The Final Bell

Thursday, June 3, 2010. Charcoal grills. Hot diggity-dogs and hamburgers. Popcorn and chips. Peanut butter Oreos (yea buddy! In terms of "healthy choices," this menu failed miserably. But in terms of contributing to the growing feeling that summer is upon us and that Alice Cooper was right in one of those songs he sang, a cook-out with all the classic ingredients was the only way we could properly bring an end to the After School Program. The After School Program, where I received a crash course in "How ...

Live from Guilford Ave.: "Bring Your Jesus To Work" Day
http://livefromguilfordave.blogspot.com/2010/05/bring-your-jesus-to-work-day.html
Wednesday, May 12, 2010. Bring Your Jesus To Work" Day. A story is a way to say something that can’t be said any other way, and it takes every word in the story to say what the meaning is.". Jesus came to work with me today. I rode my bike; he just floated beside me. Anyway, the three of us sat around my computer and filled out online job applications. Jesus gave the woman a hug when she left, and with that she said to me, "I'll be back next week.". Before he left, Jesus said, "Thank you, Scott, for bein...

Sunday, October 18, 2009. Be the ocean when it meets the sky. Be the magic in the northern lights. Be the river as it rolls along. Be the rain you remember fallin'. Save the planet for another day. Be the river as it rolls along.". Neil Young, "Be the Rain". In an effort to really commit ourselves to the four values of JVC (Pop quiz time! Ok, what are the four values of JVC? We spent a lot of money at the market, more than we usually spend during our trips to the Giant (20 dollars for 2 gallons of milk!
