life at the bottom of the world: 037: science!
http://lifeatthepole.blogspot.com/2011/10/037-science.html
Life at the bottom of the world. Blogging from the south pole. Wednesday, October 5, 2011. People often ask me, "what do you do in Antarctica? The short answer: We support science. The three permanent USAP stations, along with the various field camps, all exist for one reason. we are here in the name of scientific research. Teams ("grantees", or scientists with NSF grants) come down every summer (and winter! These are pictures that the science team took:. So many more grantees will be arriving soon to be...

http://lifeatthepole.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Life at the bottom of the world. Blogging from the south pole. Tuesday, May 3, 2011. On April 24, the sun rose and set for the last time this season. As of today (May 2), we have roughly 3 hours a day of "light" (from 11am to 2pm or so), where the sky brightens to a dull gray. not much brighter than pre-dawn or twilight. A group of about 15 of us went up to Arrival Heights, where we had a lovely view of the sun as it set below the horizon:. But we were VERY lucky! Picture by Dan Su. Goodbye sun! Vmf: veh...
life at the bottom of the world: December 2011
http://lifeatthepole.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Life at the bottom of the world. Blogging from the south pole. Thursday, December 29, 2011. I haven't abandoned this blog! However, I may be in the future. When I began this blog, it was with the intent of documenting my three month contract at the South Pole (hence the name of the blog). I then decided to extend my contract for nine additional months, this time at McMurdo Station, on the Antarctic coast. So I think a new blog might be in order. A more general one, about myself, my friends, my life&#...

I've been neglecting this blog lately, but with winter truly here, and the darkness quickly approaching, I feel now is an appropriate time to start posting again. McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The last flight departed here on March 5 ( link to Antarctic Sun article. And then once the summer crews were gone,...
life at the bottom of the world: 031: the end of a season
http://lifeatthepole.blogspot.com/2011/02/031-end-of-season.html
Life at the bottom of the world. Blogging from the south pole. Wednesday, February 9, 2011. 031: the end of a season. Assuming the weather doesn't delay us, I will be leaving the South Pole for the season in about ten hours. There are a lot of mixed feelings about this. The bulk of it, though, is sadness: I don't want to leave the Pole and all of the amazing people that I've met here, and I'll miss everything about this station so much (well, I won't miss the -50 windchills! But none of this changes the ...
