Speaking Toddler Franglais | Piglet in France
https://pigletinfrance.wordpress.com/2013/08/06/speaking-toddler-franglais
Welcome to my ramblings! Laquo; Is money worth more than anything else including family? As a break from the more serious subjects I’ve written about in the past few weeks, I thought it would be fun to write about some of the language issues we’re currently dealing with Little Miss. If you have some speech funnies to share, please do leave them in the comments at the bottom so I can have a giggle also! So, bringing up a bilingual toddler is fun right? Frustrating for Mum and Frustrating for her! So that’...

Is money worth more than anything else including family? | Piglet in France
https://pigletinfrance.wordpress.com/2013/07/23/is-money-worth-more-than-anything-else-including-family
Welcome to my ramblings! Laquo; Modern World Frustrations. Is money worth more than anything else including family? Mr Piglet is often witness to money issues tearing families apart and has recently been a unwilling spectator in a very spectacular family bust up where a family is literally being torn to shreds for a few thousand Euros. So along came Mr Piglet with two keen buyers. They were young, keen DIYers which is quite rare for young couples in France, and were willing to take on the project....

Toutes Directions: Formation Civique
http://toutesdirectionspourlafrance.blogspot.com/2008/07/formation-civique.html
Sunday, July 13, 2008. Saturday I had my "Formation Civique" as part of my Contrat d'Accueil that is now mandatory for foreigners in France. While students, language assistants, and other temporary residents don't have to sign the contract (right? There were lots of references to the "Declaration des Droits de l'Homme", but we were never read or shown the declaration in its entirety. Also lots of references to the Constitution, which we also never saw or were given to read. Did I learn anything? An Ameri...

Toutes Directions: An apple a day...
http://toutesdirectionspourlafrance.blogspot.com/2011/07/apple-day.html
Friday, July 8, 2011. An apple a day. My Belgian and German friends didn't know anything about this, so I thought I'd do a public service announcement about the different categories of doctors. So, imagine you need to see a doctor: general practitioner, specialist, whatever. How do you find one? What category are they in? Doctors in France have to decide how they do their billing; either they are in 'secteur 1' or 'secteur 2'. Doctors can charge what they like. This makes your reimbursement tricky...

Toutes Directions: French University
http://toutesdirectionspourlafrance.blogspot.com/2008/12/french-university.html
Sunday, December 28, 2008. I've been meaning to write about this since I started my Masters, but haven't had the time. For anyone who hasn't studied or worked at a French public university, you probably don't realize how different things are from, well, let's just say normal ;-) universities (American, Canadian, British, etc). In addition, the classic universities (not the Ecole de. or IUFM, or other Instituts) admit anyone who has the high school baccalaureat. That means that thousands and thous...The g...

Toutes Directions: American Banking
http://toutesdirectionspourlafrance.blogspot.com/2011/01/american-banking.html
Monday, January 10, 2011. For various reasons, I still have an American checking account open. As of 2011, their 'totally free checking' requires an average daily balance of $500, which I certainly don't have and am not interested in maintaining. I currently earn interest on my account, but to continue earning interest, I would need an average daily balance of $1000. So I did a quick search for free checking, and came across this comparison. Paypal lets you take a picture of an American check with your s...

Toutes Directions: Wisdom teeth
http://toutesdirectionspourlafrance.blogspot.com/2009/10/wisdom-teeth.html
Wednesday, October 7, 2009. Talking with my mom before and after my wisdom teeth surgery, I realized that things are done pretty differently in France. Then I climbed onto the stretcher and was wheeled down to the operating bloc by a guy making jokes I didn't always understand and who was shocked to learn I was married at 25 (what? My husband still plays video games and we eat ice cream out of the carton sometimes, it's not like we'd be any different if we weren't married.). And I almost forgot! The only...

Toutes Directions: Questions I like to answer #1: What should I visit in the US?
http://toutesdirectionspourlafrance.blogspot.com/2015/03/questions-i-like-to-answer-1-what.html
Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Questions I like to answer #1: What should I visit in the US? I've complained about the questions I don't life getting, so I thought I would do a short series on questions I do like getting as a foreigner. So for the first post: What should I visit in the US? Occasionally someone will have plans to go to a place that I know well and will ask for some suggestions. Los Angeles: the Getty museum is a must, La Brea tar pits unique and usually unknown to Europeans, and Venice Beach...

Toutes Directions: Christmas in Languedoc
http://toutesdirectionspourlafrance.blogspot.com/2010/12/christmas-in-languedoc.html
Friday, December 24, 2010. We're at the in-laws in the Gard, and this morning I helped my mil prepare 'les 13 desserts de Provence'. Thirteen desserts might seem excessive, but it's not 13 different cakes or pies. Here are most of the 13 desserts: walnuts, dates, hazelnuts, dried figs, calisson. Nougat from Montelimar, and unofficial raisins. My mil wanted two kinds of nougat, so there are the white pieces from Montelimar, and then this dark nougat. I think it's dark because it's made with honey. An Amer...

Toutes Directions: Countdown to Japan
http://toutesdirectionspourlafrance.blogspot.com/2015/03/countdown-to-japan.html
Friday, March 13, 2015. At the end of my month my husband are flying to Japan for two weeks! This will be the first time for both of us to visit Japan, and while I'm very excited, I know my husband is even more excited because this has been a dream of his for a long time. We will be flying Turkish airlines because they had decently priced tickets Toulouse-Istanbul-Tokyo and also let you travel with 30kg of luggage. Un Gaijin au Japon. We booked out own accommodations on the following sites:. Both of thes...
