Living in an Igloo. When you think about the Middle East one of the first things that tend to pop into your mind is sunshine and warm weather. Layering on thin socks, thick socks,…. Journeying to East Amman. Rain, Rain, Everywhere! Rain is an interesting occurrence in Amman, and rain mixed with a dust storm even more so. We woke up to find a yellow haze perpetuating through the shutters and…. 8220;There are clouds in the sky it’s so beautiful! Eid in the East. A Bit of the West. The Castle on a Hill.

First Impressions | Life in Levant

https://lifeinlevant.wordpress.com/2015/09/03/first-impressions

How much) he promptly replied in English, next up my friend Fatima (who I had recently been speaking to in English) repeats the same question and he responds in Arabic. Point proven. Yet, despite the continual stares, the overused. And the odd few men wishing to practice their English as you walk by with a repetitive. Yes, no, yes, no…. Seeing my blank response our journey passed in silence. Finally we found the hotel, a little black and white sign. Squished between a row of shops in Downtown Amman.

The Castle on a Hill | Life in Levant

https://lifeinlevant.wordpress.com/2015/09/04/the-castle-on-a-hill

The Castle on a Hill. Friday, the weekend here in Jordan, and we were taken by Qasid on an beginning-of-year expedition to immerse ourselves in Jordanian History and to get to know others at on different programs at the institute. As expected the coaches left bang on Arab time ( i.e. an hour an a half late). Not to worry, we were soon away out of Amman and into the hills of Ajloun. Things that I’ve learnt:. Always check the weather forecast before you hang your clothes outside to dry overnight. Dust ...

Living in an Igloo. When you think about the Middle East one of the first things that tend to pop into your mind is sunshine and warm weather. Layering on thin socks, thick socks, thermal underwear, long pajamas, a thick jumper, woolly gloves, a bobble hat and a scarf as I crawled into my bed last night under two duvets and my dressing gown piled on top, ensuring that I didn’t get heatstroke was not at the top of my agenda. Thinks I’ve learnt:. When we finally bought gas for the heater! You are commentin...

Rain, Rain, Everywhere! Rain is an interesting occurrence in Amman, and rain mixed with a dust storm even more so. We woke up to find a yellow haze perpetuating through the shutters and the sound of lightening echoing around the room…. at least we had learnt from our mistakes and brought our washing inside the night before this time. Arriving at the gym (the reason we had left early) we found it surrounded by a lake of water and it was (I suppose unsurprisingly) shut. Downtown Amman (courtesy of Mazaj FM).

Eid in the East | Life in Levant

https://lifeinlevant.wordpress.com/2015/09/25/eid-in-the-east

Eid in the East. Eid mubarak’ ‘Kul a3m wa ant bihkayr’. Eid al-Fitr, one would pass it by without notice in the UK, but here it constitutes for 4 days holiday, and one week holiday for us at Qasid. All of us at Exeter who chose to find our own accommodation (two girl’s flats and one boys flat) decided to all come together to have a big meal. Anam cooked traditional Indian cuisine, Charlotte cooked Cornish pasties and I cooked welsh cakes. All went well until we ran out of gas. Eid at the Boys’ Flat.

P for Phyllis: May 2015

http://pforphyllis.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 7, 2015. Why I voted in the UK's General Election. I won't be living in the UK in the next five years, in fact, I will be going back to my home country in July. So why did I still vote? Well, simply because I can. Being a Malaysian - a Commonwealth citizen - I'm eligible to vote in the General Election here. Of which I didn't know about until I received a letter from the local council asking me to register to vote - otherwise I would have to pay a fine of £50. I will not forget the day my c...

P for Phyllis: Taiwan Day 7 / Free-and-easy in Taipei 台北

http://pforphyllis.blogspot.com/2014/02/7th-day-in-taiwan-free-and-easy-in.html

Wednesday, February 26, 2014. Taiwan Day 7 / Free-and-easy in Taipei 台北. The second last day in Taiwan was a free-and-easy day! My uncle (my mom's younger brother) picked us up after breakfast and we went to Yehliu Geopark (野柳地质公园)! We left at 8:30am and it was a 40-50 minutes' drive from our hotel (Ximen Citizen Hotel). People queue-ing up to take photos with the Queen's Head! It's the only rock here getting so much attention. Honeycombed rock. So geli. This is the statue of Lin Tien Jane. It was er...

http://pforphyllis.blogspot.com/2012/08/of-mud-tofu-and-peanuts.html

Wednesday, August 8, 2012. Day trip to Raub, Pahang! Last month on a Sunday, my family went for a one-day trip to Raub, Pahang that was organised by my mom's group of friends that go for morning exercises everyday. The majority of them were fairly old people, and only four of us were from the. much, much younger age group. At 7am sharp, the bus was waiting right at the entrance to our neighbourhood. Love the punctuality! After breakfast, the journey began! The wind was blowing strongly in my face and I w...

P for Phyllis: Everyone's hyped up for CHEER

http://pforphyllis.blogspot.com/2011/07/photobucket.html

Tuesday, July 26, 2011. Everyone's hyped up for CHEER. Last Sunday, CHEER 2011 was being held at Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil. It was my first time going there, and I went as a BRAT (The Star R.AGE Young Journalist Programme which stands for Bright, Roving, Annoying Teens) for a coverage - sort of. Was outside before (really) entering the stadium. There I met Lii Yung and Karisma, two other BRATs from the same workshop as me. The other BRATs were sitting at our 'base', hogging the laptops and tweeting ever...

P for Phyllis: A moment of inspiration

http://pforphyllis.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-moment-of-inspiration.html

Friday, March 13, 2015. A moment of inspiration. I was in town the other day (actually just two days ago) waiting for the guy who repaired my phone to arrive at his stall, so I randomly went into Waterstones (I can't believe there are so many Waterstones on one High Street - they're all a stone. S throw away from one another ha ha geddit? To while away my time. Among the stillness of the place and the pleasant smell of new books, I rediscovered my safe haven. P for Phyllis: Perfection

http://pforphyllis.blogspot.com/2015/04/perfection.html

Saturday, April 18, 2015. Today was absolutely beautiful. It was perfect in every sense of the word. I think it is fair to use the word "perfect" to describe Lake District, because everything in it is wonderfully made by my Creator. Trying my best to absorb everything that is in front of my eyes, but it seemed impossible no matter how hard I try. I wish I could memorise the exact way the colours contrast against each other, how the green is wedged in a nice proportion between the blue, and how the su...

Sunday, February 8, 2015. WEEK 21: God is faithful and amazing! I would just like to add that God is always faithful and amazing, but this week I truly saw the overflowing of His grace.). The first week of February has been CRAZY. First up, I have two presentations and an essay (formative, but still) due this coming week, so I was busy writing my essay and preparing for my presentations. Ugh, the amount of reading that I have to do. Saw this video from Katya. ARGHH I WAS SO ANGRY AT MYSELF. Sigh, I kinda...

P for Phyllis: Cruising on SuperStar Libra @ Penang, Malaysia

http://pforphyllis.blogspot.com/2014/06/cruising-on-superstar-libra-penang.html

Monday, June 23, 2014. Cruising on SuperStar Libra @ Penang, Malaysia. My family and I went on a cruise when we were in Penang last December. It was a one-night 'Cruise to Nowhere', whereby the ship departs at night and goes to a mysterious place in the middle of the ocean called Nowhere and comes back to the port in the morning. ok jokes. Hello Kitty seems to be everywhere. So huge; so exciting! The narrow corridor to our room. It reminds me of Titanic heh. And I came to the smallest room I've ever seen.

Sunday, September 21, 2014. WEEK 1: Freshers' Week. Because I didn't want to miss the university coach as it was the last bus for the day - departing at 4pm. Heathrow Airport is about 40 minutes' drive away from the hotel, but it was hard to predict the duration of the journey because there was also the possibility of heavy traffic. Thankfully the shuttle finally came, and I managed to reach the airport in time - pheww! One minute into meeting someone new and I have already embarrassed myself. The moment...
