Life's Private Book: More on Gopnik, Chesterton, and St. Thomas Aquinas
http://lifesprivatebook.blogspot.com/2008/07/more-on-gopnik-chesterton-and-st-thomas.html
The riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man. - G.K. Chesterton. Saturday, July 5, 2008. More on Gopnik, Chesterton, and St. Thomas Aquinas. I commented on Adam Gopnik's article on G.K. Chesterton in the July 7 edition of the New Yorker. In this post, I will say something more about materialism, Chesterton and St. Thomas. Chesterton/St. Thomas disagree with both Plato and the modern materialist. They deny the primary split in being effected by both parties. Being is one. We can take t...

The riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man. - G.K. Chesterton. Monday, August 25, 2014. Game of Thrones, Machiavelli, Socrates and Plato. This post has spoilers for Game of Thrones]. Ethan makes an interesting comment here. In that work Plato developed the notion of justice based on the well-ordered city, where every citizen knows his place and fulfills his duty. But the king does not live an. City existence; his life is. What would Machiavelli think of Eddard Stark? Such an expecta...

The riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man. - G.K. Chesterton. Sunday, June 28, 2015. Recent Supreme Court Actions. In researching my recent post, I came across a phrase that seemed appropriate to the recent actions of our Supreme Court:. No human being is competent to wield an irresponsible control over mankind without becoming swollen with pride and unrighteousness." -. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Life's Private Book: Jerry Coyne and Mistaking the Definition of Science for a Conclusion of Science
http://lifesprivatebook.blogspot.com/2015/06/jerry-coyne-and-mistaking-definition-of.html
The riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man. - G.K. Chesterton. Friday, June 12, 2015. Jerry Coyne and Mistaking the Definition of Science for a Conclusion of Science. Sometimes an author puts two things together that make it clear what is going on in his project. Jerry Coyne, while discussing the nefarious influence of the Templeton Foundation's money on science (p. 20), tells us this:. Then, on page 23 while quoting L.R. Hamelin, we are informed that:. On Coyne). Coyne had a pu...
Life's Private Book: Lear and Aristotle on Courage and Radical Hope
http://lifesprivatebook.blogspot.com/2009/09/lear-and-aristotle-on-courage-and_06.html
The riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man. - G.K. Chesterton. Sunday, September 6, 2009. Lear and Aristotle on Courage and Radical Hope. I recently finished reading Jonathan Lear's Radical Hope, Ethics in the Face of Cultural Devastation. Lear is also the author of the wonderful Aristotle, the Desire to Understand. The crow-stick was also used as a "line in the sand" in battle. If a warrior planted his coup-stick, he was obliged to hold the ground in which it was planted or l...

David's Reading Log: The Martian by Andy Weir
http://davidsreadinglog.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-martian-by-andy-weir.html
Saturday, July 4, 2015. The Martian by Andy Weir. An outstanding science fiction thriller about an astronaut stranded on Mars. It's "near real" sci-fi, in the sense that Weir stays as close to known science and a realistic mission to Mars as possible. One of the best works of fiction I've read in years. Looking forward to the movie. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Http:/ www.lifesprivatebook.blogspot.com. Re-read of The City of Man by Pierre Manent. Subversive Thoughts for an Infantile .

Saturday, July 18, 2015. Re-read of The City of Man by Pierre Manent. This is one of my favorite "companion" books and is the most thorough and penetrating analysis of modern thought that I have read. It's always worth re-reading every year or two. Subversive Thoughts for an Infantile Age by Susan Neiman. Saturday, July 4, 2015. The Martian by Andy Weir. Faith vs Fact by Jerry Coyne. I've written some posts about this book on my main blog. David's Reading Log: August 2015
http://davidsreadinglog.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 18, 2015. Badlands by C.J. Box. CJ Box has a new hero in Cassie Dewell, a sheriff's deputy who moves to North Dakota to take a position as chief investigator in the expanding shale oil country. This looks like the beginning of a new series just as good as his Joe Pickett series. Re-read of An Intellectual History of Liberalism by Pierre Manent. This book, along with Manent's The City of Man. Is indispensable for understanding what it means to be modern. And we are all inevitably modern.
David's Reading Log: Adios America by Ann Coulter
http://davidsreadinglog.blogspot.com/2015/08/adios-america-by-ann-coulter.html
Sunday, August 2, 2015. Adios America by Ann Coulter. I generally don't read these types of contemporary political books, but my library had this and I gave it a shot. A very easy read and Coulter is actually pretty funny and, unfortunately, right about immigration. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Http:/ www.lifesprivatebook.blogspot.com. Badlands by C.J. Box. David's Reading Log: The Future of Marriage by David Blankenhorn
http://davidsreadinglog.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-future-of-marriage-by-david.html
Friday, June 5, 2015. The Future of Marriage by David Blankenhorn. I had read Blankenhorn's. Some time ago, and wondered if he written a follow on. It turns out he did, an excellent work on the state of marriage and its future. He's got the best take on gay marriage and its effect on marriage in general that I have read. And his predictions (it was written about 10 years ago) have been coming true since. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Http:/ www.lifesprivatebook.blogspot.com. View my complete profile.

David's Reading Log: July 2014
http://davidsreadinglog.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 26, 2014. 10% Happier by Dan Harris. Dan Harris is a host of Good Morning America and Nightline on ABC TV. The book is about his discovery of Buddhist meditation and how it made him, in his words "10% happier." It actually does more than that for him, giving him some center and peace in a typical "type A" lifestyle. The book is worth reading for Harris's style and self-deprecating humor. For a TV personality, he's refreshingly free of vanity. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

The riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man. - G.K. Chesterton. Tuesday, February 27, 2018. Random Notes on Steven Pinker's Enlightenment Now. I'm reading Steven Pinker's Enlightenment Now. Herewith are some random notes:. P 234 - Pinker is discussing knowledge and sociology:. Do better-educated countries get richer, or can richer countries afford more education? One way to cut the knot is to take advantage of the fact that a cause must precede its effect.
