Caledonian Dreaming by Gerry Hassan – Book review by Joe Lafferty. August 20, 2014. On the eve of a historic referendum on Scottish independence in September 2014, Gerry Hassan’s Caledonian Dreaming is a landmark book. He articulates, with incisive political and historical analysis, the landscape of what has taken the UK and Scotland to where they are today. And at the same time, this is a profoundly human book. In his opening chapter, Hassan sets the scene for his book. He attempts to write somethin...

“The economy is failing society”
http://www.joelafferty.com/2015/07/25/the-economy-is-failing-society
The economy is failing society. July 25, 2015. What Is Wrong with the West’s Economies? Edmund S. Phelps; New York review of Books: AUGUST 13, 2015. A long read (in Internet terms), but worth it. Introducing (in some cases) novel words: justice, inclusion, a good economy and human flourishing, into what Phelps sees as an overwhelming mechanised view of economics. And, he argues, “classical economics … has little place for creativity and imagination.”. Comment… add one. Getting the best out of your staff.

KEEPING QUIET

July 12, 2015. Now we will count to twelve. And we will all keep still. For once on the face of the earth,. Let’s not speak in any language;. Let’s stop for one second,. And not move our arms so much. It would be an exotic moment. Without rush, without engines;. We would all be together. In a sudden strangeness. Fisherman in the cold sea. Would not harm whales. And the man gathering salt. Would look at his hurt hands. Those who prepare green wars,. Wars with gas, wars with fire,. Life is what it is about;.

Articles about Scotland’s future. Alan Gilchrist’s referendum update. With just a few weeks to go and with one head-to-head debate behind us, where are we now? Roughly speaking I’m not trying to deny the lead in the polls for Project Fear of those who have made up their minds, half are for independence and half are against. So, there are tensions in Scotland want one thing and want the other all being managed brilliantly in good spirits and good heart by all involved. Getting the best out of your staff.

A response to Carol Craig. September 17, 2014. The paradox of a positive pessimist. Verses the sadness of a pessimistic optimist). Two very late interventions have emerged in the #IndyRef debate. One from Carol Craig. And the other from Ewan Morrison. Why they are so late is interesting to me. Why have they not felt able to speak out earlier? Of course in Ewen’s case, he has. He spoke out for YES, but how has moved to NO. One of his friends Kevin Williamson. Has written an excellent response to this.
