Arthur Tress: Documentary Fiction. How has your background affected your imagemaking? What else has influenced your way of seeing? Tell me about latest book and exhibition San Francisco 1964. In 1964 I stayed with my sister Madeleine in San Francisco and spent four or five months photographing this transitional time in the city. The Beats had left, but the Summer of Love had not yet happened. How do you visualize your photographs? How did you come to do your noted Dream Collector work? I no longer see an...

What’s in a name? The Dane says he has discovered a large land mass lying above the Arctic Circle, covered permanently to at least 80% by think glacial ice. He is not married and wants his girlfriend to join him, so he is calling his discovery “Greenland.” Good luck when she finds out the truth. I found that the problem is not being in Iceland, but returning home, where you immediately get the flu (102 degrees) and have to do your taxes. So if you go, stay there. It is quite a place. That’s it....The &ld...

Stephen Berkman: Documentary Photographer of the Mind. Photo Technique, July/August 2012. The Songbird and the Sharpshooter, undated. 11x14 inches. Albumen print from wet-collodion negative. I am interested in photography’s first 40 years because it was at its zenith right from the start. Photography has not improved much; it’s just gotten more convenient. I like the visual code of the nineteenth century, the formality of it, the way things looked, and the mix between art and science. Obscura Object, und...

Why the F295 Symposium? To help those who haven’t been here understand more about F295 we’ve asked a number of past speakers, as well as those who have continually returned to F295, what keeps bringing them back to Pittsburgh and F295. We’ll feature more of these,. Pieces, over the coming weeks, but today I’m proud to run a few words from photographer, author, historian Robert Hirsch. Why do I love the F295 conferences? Let me count the ways. Hope to see you there. Hirsch is a former Associate Editor for...

Fiji Island Mermaid Press: Work in Progress - a linocut for "Our Rarer Monsters"
http://fimpress.blogspot.com/2012/04/work-in-progress-linocut-for-our-rarer.html
Monday, April 30, 2012. Work in Progress - a linocut for "Our Rarer Monsters". I'm currently working on the seventh linocut of a series of eight that will be published in a book of poetry by Noel Sloboda later this year. The book will be "Our Rarer Monsters", and I've been posting the linocuts and some various related images over on flickr. Here's the first little doodle, drawn on the manuscript while reading the poems and thinking about the kinds of images I wanted to make:. Fiji Island Mermaid Press.
