The Lignite Pit Cafe. Your Up Comming Wedding. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. We have a number of places around the garden where you can take photos of your big day. If you wish to have your ceremony here you have the choice of a number of spots around the garden where you can take your vowels, but if the weather turns on you the covered garden gives you a backup option on site, so there is no need to frantically call round on the morning of the big day to let people know of a change of venue.

The Lignite Pit Cafe. The garden is set over about 16 acres which includes about 3 acres of lake, including a couple of small islands. There are a number of paths that weave there way around the lake, and take you past both the waterfalls. Dotted every so often there are places to sit and enjoy the views. The Lignite Pit Cafe. If you are looking for a place to stay with a view, do we have a spot for you. No matter how you get here we can find a place for you, with 2 powered spots for self contained vehicle, a large hard packed gravel area for your unpowered vehicles, and lots of grass for your tents. Sorry we don't have any cabins. We have a first in best dress policy, so you can pick your own spot with a view or more sheltered one if the wind isn't playing fair. Unpowered site - $5 / person.

Lignite Pit - History

The Lignite Pit Cafe. Construction of the Seaward Bush Branch started back in 1883. Originally it ran from Invercargill to Waimatua, this section was opened 1886. Two yeas later the line was extended to Mokotua. In 1895 the line was further extended to George Road, with a siding added at Ashers. 1899 saw the line further extended to Waimahaka. 12 years later the final track was laid on this line ending in Tokanui. The final train service was in 1966. The line was dismantled within the next few years.
