In the pursuit of a sustainable life on micro acreage. A little bit about me. Category Archives: thinking posts. July 11, 2016. I think the time has come to add a small flock to the homestead. What I’m wrestling with now is coop placement so that I don’t bind up the works. The way the land is laid out leaves a roughly … Continue reading →. Follow lilredhomestead on twitter. August 9, 2015. Good morning. Today is once again pack up day. We begin with fighting children; and coffee. Lots of coffee. I have somehow managed to lock up my elbow, man it hurts. Bacon and eggs are sizzling away on the griddle. My wife is an excellent cook, and I’m very thankful for her. Like what you are reading?

August 8, 2015. This week I got to see the ugly side of corporate America. The side that puts the almighty buck ahead of people. It got me thinking. There were a bunch of people that now have to explain that they have no job now. Some would need to explain to their kids. Like what you are reading? Share it with the world!

In the pursuit of a sustainable life on micro acreage. A little bit about me. Rain catchment upgrade pt1. August 12, 2016. 55gallons just isn’t what it used to be. The garden has nearly tripled in size and it’s not shrinking anytime soon. My next option is to upgrade the rain catch. 220 gallons seems like a good start that can be … Continue reading →. In the pursuit of a sustainable life on micro acreage. A little bit about me. Newer posts →. August 11, 2016. Back a bit, when I put down the burlap I built in triangles that would become new beds. Today they get opened up. There are two that can be opened up. And they had previously had buckwheat interspersed with the existing grass. The buckwheat did not seem to do as well as it has been doing with open ground. Here you can see it intermingled with the grass and getting out paced. Until next time….

July 9, 2013. July 9, 2013. 2013’s First Tomatoes. My first tomatoes for 2013! Lessons Lola Taught Me. July 8, 2013. You may not always get the chicken you thought you were getting. When she was about a month old, we found out that Lola was not a leghorn, but a Cornish X Rock, a feeder chicken, one bred to be butchered. After a month of looking forward to a couple of years with her, we had to prepare to butcher her in just over a month. Look at those legs. Think carefully about naming your chickens.

September 9, 2013. Have you ever wished for something so much, that it was all you could think about? How about not being able to breathe a word of it because you want it so bad and don’t want to jinx it? Then there was another two weeks of waiting to see if our offer was accepted. And then once it was accepted a month and a half to finish refinancing our house to buy the land. Once the money was in the bank, another two weeks for the title. Finally we signed the papers and paid for the land last week.
First Eggs! – NaughtyHam Farm

September 19, 2013. The day I have been patiently waiting for has arrived. I checked the coop late this morning and found two eggs. I didn’t check the coop yesterday, so I am fairly certain Jack laid them. She turned four months old yesterday. Sam is about 2 1/2 weeks younger then Jack and looks ready to lay anytime. So, I guess I will find out tomorrow if I have one or two layers. With a store bought egg. Here’s a couple recent pictures of my girls. Any tips of taking pictures of chickens? I was kinda t...

A New Day
Thursday, December 27, 2012. Looking back I see that I met my challenge . not by purging 25 items for 20 consecutive days, but 500 (and possible more) none the less! I got rid of the two LARGE boxes inside our front door that I used to fill with donations as I purged. My husband patched a hole (he had cut) in the ceiling of the closet in my office/craft room/library so that I could utilize the closet for storing some things . woo hoo! I'm making progress and that's what counts. I'm pleased. Filled a 13 g...

Lil Red House | a little bit of a dream, coming true…
A little bit of a dream, coming true…. Hey, can you…? September 19, 2011 in garden. Just preserved two heads of cauliflower by pickling them. I couldn’t find my recipe from last year that was so good, so this one may be a bit different from the stellar cauli-pickles of last year. And yesterday I harvested the parsley in my herb garden–all except one plant which is producing a seed head. At the moment it is drying in the dehydrator. And it’s surprising how long it takes to dry! September 4, 2011 in garden.
