Lines and Lines of Tangency. Skip to primary content. February 22, 2012. I go out of my way to let them know that, within reason, I won’t shy away from their curiosity. Still, I lie. Some of the lies are self-serving. (. Have this graded by tomorrow. Some are self-preserving (. Tell your mom it must have ended up in my spam folder. Some of them aren’t really even told. From the soil of the teenage imagination. (. I have served time in prison. I am the father of the health teacher’s new baby. My kids are ...

Lines and Lines of Tangency. Skip to primary content. August 22, 2012. And, if you vote yea, is a belief in luck an obstacle to understanding probability? This question came up on Twitter a couple of nights ago when Christopher Danielson. Were discussing Daniel Kahneman’s. Thinking, Fast and Slow. Specifically, they were talking about the fact that Kahneman doesn’t shy away from using the word. Of luck I feel is a function of. Let’s look at a couple examples of my own personal luck. As an aside, I threw out this series of equations in the hopes of (a) foreshadowing singular matrices, and (b) offering a justification for the lifelong prohibition against dividing by zero:. I thought this was just so beautiful. Why can’t we divide by zero? Because zero doesn’t have a multiplicative inverse. There is. No solution to 0x = 1, so 0. The inverse of zero?

Lines and Lines of Tangency. Skip to primary content. July 29, 2013. As happens with amazing frequency, Christopher Danielson. Said something interesting today on Twitter. Dear children’s publishing industry: It is NOT a property of rectangles that they have “two long sides and two short sides”. #ThatIsAll. Christopher (@Trianglemancsd) July 29, 2013. And, as also happens with impressive regularity, Max Ray. Chimed in with something that led to an interesting conversation. We can build a cone over. To be...

In general, I hate doing this — because it feels like a self-promotional trick — but in order for this post to make any kind of sense, you have to go back and read the last one. In particular, you have to read Max’s comment. I will put on my teacher face and wait for a few minutes. Which is a proper subset of another set,. But the second one is much more problematic. Why might that be? The seemingly obvious answer is that recognizing a ...

http://easiertimes.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
The Life and Times of Someone. No particular purpose- just what I happen to be thinking about. Monday, April 29, 2013. A hopeful start with a frustrating end. I taught two classes today. Honors Geometry and Pre-Calculus. The first class went very well. We had a review session. Several students either started or completed work on extra credit assignments. It was good. Saturday, April 27, 2013. As I reach the end of my first year teaching high school, I am thinking about what was good and what wasn't.

The next day I assign two problems for a warm-up:. 1) (2a - 3b) 4. 2) (5x y 2) 5. Most students make the error of expanding (1) without the correct parentheses around the 2a and -3b terms which I correct when they come to show me their work. They go on to successfully expand (2). The Life and Times of Someone. No particular purpose- just what I happen to be thinking about. Sunday, August 5, 2012. There are no unanswerable questions in Euclidean Geometry. I guess we can delight or confuse our students by telling them that every question has an answer in Geometry (as they study it) but possibly not in their other math classes. From Wikipedia. It would be sort of interesting to talk a little about geometry as dealing with thr intuitive notions of points, lines and space versus a pur...

The Life and Times of Someone. No particular purpose- just what I happen to be thinking about. Thursday, July 16, 2009. I have noticed that minimalism/simplification blogs encourage would-be simplifiers to evaluate their priorities. For instance David Bruno wrote that one should evaluate his priorities to aid in cutting down to 100 personal possessions. I mostly ignored this- thinking that if I only had 100 items that it would just magically simplify my life. Those activities out of my life? I have a lot...

The Life and Times of Someone. No particular purpose- just what I happen to be thinking about. Monday, June 21, 2010. I am pursuing my PhD in Mathematics but I am working with an Economist this summer. It has been an interesting experience so far because I am seeing first hand how this other groups of academics (Economists) are using and abusing math. Currently, I'm reading about Optimal Control Theory. In particular this book. Sunday, June 20, 2010. 1) Simply my life, mostly by minimizing my possessions.
The Life and Times of Someone: Inverse Trig Functions

The Life and Times of Someone. No particular purpose- just what I happen to be thinking about. Thursday, February 27, 2014. It was horribly boring teaching how to calculate indefinite integrals which were inverse trig functions so I mixed up in the last class. I didn't give them any of the formulas. Instead I had them calculate some derivatives and rewrite as anti- derivatives. It turned out fairly well. Here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.
