Trends in College Writing. Tuesday, May 4 2010. Christine Brown, a sophomore at La Salle University, is an enthusiastic student, does well on tests, and hopes to one day become a teacher. Though a model student in other respects, Brown struggles with her writing. I’ve always hated English class, she says, I so feel self-conscious writing papers; I’m a terrible writer. Some argue that increased text messaging and Internet use are to blame for students’ poor writing. Eleanor Johnson, English professor ...

Gotta luv facebook, lol! Monday, Apr 19 2010. But this is a social networking site, emphasis on the “social.” High school and college students don’t always speak correctly when they’re with their friends. They never have and they probably never will. Why should a social website be any different with how these age groups write? Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. The Law of Confusion. Monday, Mar 29 2010. Ok, so technically this sentence is grammatically sound so I can’t completely blast it as completely terrible. But look at it. Really look at it. It’s one sentence! Could it be split into two or more sentences for the sake of clarity? Does Justice Taft get a prize for keeping it as one sentence? Allegory of Grammar «Linguistics Lover Linguistics Lover

Monday, Mar 15 2010. Though I can appreciate the beauty of a well crafted painting, I usually miss the deeper meaning behind most works of art. Drifting through the galleries at the Walters Museum of Art in Baltimore I finally found a painting that speaks a language I can understand. Catcher in the Rye. The late J.D. Salinger developed the characteristics of adolescence through his words, sentence structure, and organization so that the adolescent experience could be felt by his readers in a way ...Notif...

Slight Deviation «Linguistics Lover Linguistics Lover

https://linguisticslover.wordpress.com/2010/03/31/slight-deviation

Wednesday, Mar 31 2010. My project for this week has been to create a soundslide presentation, but my blog topic doesn’t really lend itself to this format, so I’ve slightly deviated from my normal subject matter. Ok, maybe more than slightly. My soundslide project is how to knit a scarf. While unrelated to grammar and writing, it is another area that I enjoy, so hopefully you’ll find my presentation informative. I’ll try to keep it on-topic in the future. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Becoming organized | My journey from total chaos, to under control. | Page 2

About creating Becoming Organized. About the author, Kathryn Bergin. The first step in my opinion to becoming organized is having a place where you can store everything you’re going to need for your day-to-day activities. Instead of relying on your memory for appointments and assignments due, or a phone number, keep track of it in a planner. It frees your mind up for remembering other things. There are many methods of keeping a planner, but for now, I’d like to focus on what I use: a Moleskine. Something...

First Post– Transitions. May 21, 2015. May 21, 2015. I have been thinking a lot about transitions. I recently underwent a huge transition from a liberal arts college where I studied linguistics and language for knowledge sake. Now, I am in a career oriented masters program, learning about how to treat real people with real disorders. I think this is a really noble field. That’s why I decided to go into it! However, I won’t lie, the transition has not been an easy one. Of some distantly past language....

How low can you go? September 18, 2011 1 Comment. Recently the media have been reporting on voice studies showing that women prefer deep masculine voices. Well this might be a given but perhaps the assumptions hidden in the research should be teased out. As usual the non-social scientists link gender preferences and the like to a project of evolution. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for evolution … more of it I say. The voice research reported such as this in the Belfast Telegraph. What is also interesting a...
