LA and California History viewed through Perry Mason and Paul Drake’s Hair – Lisa Schweitzer
https://lisaschweitzer.com/2010/02/21/la-and-california-history-viewed-through-perry-mason-and-paul-drakes-hair
Working to understand the complex connections between people, cities, and environments. LA and California History viewed through Perry Mason and Paul Drake’s Hair. Ok, where to begin? Perry Mason, for those who don’t know, is a fictional defense attorney practicing in Los Angeles, created by the mystery writer Earle Stanley Gardner, shown here. If you’ve never picked up a Perry Mason novel, I highly recommend. Perry Mason was the basis of the long-running tv series–it ran from 1957 to 1966! Finally, when...

Working to understand the complex connections between people, cities, and environments. Day: August 10, 2015. On not meaning to undercut women’s leadership and doing it anyway. I had a Thing happen this weekend, with the usual conditions in play: very nice, well-intentioned men who outrank me making decisions on my behalf, trying to be helpful, and, in the end, sending both me and all the young women involved the message: women can’t lead. There comes a point where, when you say to somebody “you ca...

Working to understand the complex connections between people, cities, and environments. LaCour’s mess v. Zissner on finding his writing voice in his 50s. William Zissner’s book, On Writing Well,. Was important to me when I was just starting out as an academic. I still send it to my younger colleagues if they are struggling with writing. If there is a kinder, clearer book on learning to edit your own work, I’ve yet to find it. Mr Zissner passed recently. Here is his obit from the NYT. Young scholars (and ...

Working to understand the complex connections between people, cities, and environments. Street vendors and safe streets. EPGNews has a story on a street vending. Study conducted in Boyle Heights by our SPPD students who were doing their academic capstone. The students, Josefina Campos, Jasmine Kim, and Lauren Yokomizo, did the work for the Los Angeles Urban Renewal Network. They did a great job. Pollution of public spaces? From the smoke from open fires? Here we have the trifecta, however, of why we ofte...

Working to understand the complex connections between people, cities, and environments. Part 2. David Levinson’s CityLab discussion on transit: Competitive tendering. As I noted yesterday, I am taking some time to respond to David Levinson’s incredibly interesting piece on How to Make Mass Transit Sustainable Once and For All. Yesterday I took up the institutional structure Levinson suggested. Today I’ll start in the seven points. The first is competitive tendering:. Post hoc ergo proper hoc. The reason ...

Working to understand the complex connections between people, cities, and environments. No, USC did not tell me to stop using social media or to tone it down. So one of the comments I’ve received since I left Twitter was some conjecture that my bosses at USC got wind of how frank I am on social media, read something they didn’t like, and told me to stop posting. That’s what scholars are for, and USC has never been anything other than supportive of my scholarly ideas. We have work to do, like mo...Deletin...

I painted my first painting in 1983. Since that time I have always had at least one canvas on my easel. To say I love painting is a gross understatement. Though very difficult at times, it is the most rewarding and integral thing in my life. This of course, is outside of my husband, children and grandchildren. I love color. I love experimenting and painting in saturated colors. I love figure painting, but also paint florals, still lifes and ideas.
