Semeiotikos: September 2008
http://semeiotikos.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Monday, September 29, 2008. A Boy And His Bass. A MENAGERIE OF INSTRUMENTS. For the past couple years, I've had a not-so-secret longing. Like a guilty porn addict, I've been stealing glances at websites, lingering around the edges of eBay auctions, all the while knowing that I shouldn't. I wanted a bass guitar. In high school I was in a rock band (for more on that take a look at my last post), and I played bass guitar. When I went off to college, I stopped playing. It went something like this:. Acoustic ...

Semeiotikos: February 2008

Thursday, February 7, 2008. Would last. She would just have to ride those moments out. For me, it was less debilitating. I would tell myself this was because he was my father, not my husband. I hadn’t spent. My time with him—not in the way she had. She knew him as a person, as a mate. To me, he was just my father. To her, he was something much more. As a married man now, I get that. Big time. But I was not immune to suffering. I was not apathetic. This was not the case. I did not turn around. I was, well...

Semeiotikos: Rite of Passage Subverted (Part One)
http://semeiotikos.blogspot.com/2008/07/rite-of-passage-subverted-part-one.html
Wednesday, July 30, 2008. Rite of Passage Subverted (Part One). Where It Began: Buffy Backstory. My next posting (after this one) will be a rumination on episode 46 of. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This episode, entitled "Helpless," comes from season three of Joss Whedon's magnum opus. The posting, "Rite of Passage Subverted: Buffy's Bout With 'Helpless'-ness," will discuss rites of passage, structuralism, and post-feminism in regards to a television show that altered the face of serialized television.

Friday, February 6, 2009. How to Make a Chinese Dumpling. That's a simple but honest statement. It's also a good place to start: This past fall, I was introduced to a Chinese Anthropologist on loan from Beijing, courtesy of a Fulbright Scholarship. Yongjia came to North Carolina to teach for a year and while his grasp of English is better than some of my students, he was new to the U.S., and certainly new to rural North Carolina. I've even tried to teach him how to drive a car. The Thing About Food.

Wednesday, May 21, 2008. Mysteries Revisited (Part Two). So part one of my post was all about the service, about the marriage ceremony. And I'll follow up with a few final observations:. As a writing teacher, I am constantly aware of my audience. I may not always heed or cater to my audience (clearly, my long blogs are not audience friendly), but I am always cognizant of all those people just beyond the edge of the stage. I mentioned in part one that we elicited some good hearty laughs during our service.

Semeiotikos: October 2008
http://semeiotikos.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, October 22, 2008. Burn, Baby, Burn. Earlier this week, I was driving home from work and heard a bit on NPR about a church burning porn ( Florida Church Burns X-Rated Film Reels. The organization in question had purchased an old drive-in, and they were in the process of turning the site into a worship center. During their renovations, they uncovered a stash of film reels. Or so they say. What were their reactions, I wonder? Like Forrest Gump, they were making lemonade out of lemons. Certainly, ...

Monday, April 14, 2008. All Hail The Aporia. Several months ago, after a lively panel discussion on postmodernism—a pet project of mine and my esteemed colleagues—I professed to my friend over at Virtual Bourgeois. That "Poststructuralism saved my life.". Actually," he replied. "You mean poststructuralism. I thought of this exchange as I gleefully ingested Stanley Fish's most recent blog, " French Theory in America. Page, I noted quite slyly that I am "Occasionally Agnostic"). I did (or at least I think ...

Semeiotikos: Confessions
http://semeiotikos.blogspot.com/p/confessions.html
The Set Up: Confessions of a Practicing Postmoderinst. So there it is. Now, it might be a good jumping off point to begin this (my confessions; I’ll get to those in a minute) by outlining where this postmodern identification comes from. Last night, I was reading Rosemarie Tong’s Feminist Thought. 3rd ed) and Tong established her reading of postmodern feminism by citing Jane Flax’s rundown of modernist thought. I’d like to do the same (see, postmodernist co-ops other writers! Power does not trump reason&#...

Thursday, January 17, 2008. Comedia Del Farte: Reflections on Born Standing Up. I don't remember what year it was, only that I was an early teen. For a short stretch of years my family was regularly engaged in the operations of a church in my hometown and, despite my father's deep distrust of organized religion, we found ourselves trekking up to "Presbyterian Point" at the lake. We would spend a handful of days boating and swimming—and even, gasp, sitting around the fire singing "Kumbaya.". Where these t...

Semeiotikos: November 2009
http://semeiotikos.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Sunday, November 8, 2009. Several years ago, one of my colleagues asked if I'd heard of the term "torture porn.". But it felt familiar, like I knew what it meant without needing explanation—and thought it an apt moniker for the type of film it describes. I'd watched bits of Hostel. I'd seen The Passion of the Christ. Watching James Caviezel get whipped— ripped open by a cat-o-nine-tails, front and center in the film frame— was tough. Later, I read David Edelstein's article (where he coined the term: here.
