Something that Katherine Paterson said at April’s Festival of Faith and Writing in April struck me: We have to be careful as Christians NOT to teach our children that goodness means inactivity, means NOT doing bad things. Literary Christian: Preparation Beats Back Fear

http://literarychristian.blogspot.com/2008/02/preparation-beats-back-fear.html

Wednesday, February 20, 2008. Preparation Beats Back Fear. My mantra right now: Step through the doors that the Lord is opening (to write, do public speaking, and take photos). And when I get nervous and rather bury my talent, or completely doubt that I have any talent, then I need to prepare and practice as best I can. So, I’ve come to realize that for me, the only way to manage my stress is to practice and practice some more, whether the activity is a photo shoot or a speech. Those photos are amazing!

Literary Christian: Other Women Key to Novel Writing

http://literarychristian.blogspot.com/2008/04/other-women-key-to-novel-writing.html

Friday, April 04, 2008. Other Women Key to Novel Writing. In my recently published novel,. The characters shatter Christian stereotypes. They do not remain persistently optimistic and pray all their problems away. Their true-to-life struggles resist simple, quick solutions. This novel was inspired by my own life struggles and return to church as a single mother. The church I joined was full of other people like myself, who had made big mistakes. I felt completely adrift. 8220;That’s what I thought,...

Literary Christian: Always Finish What You Start

http://literarychristian.blogspot.com/2008/02/always-finish-what-you-start.html

Wednesday, February 06, 2008. Always Finish What You Start. When aspiring writers ask for tips, here are two that I give:. You must be willing to write really terrible first drafts. Put your ego in your back pocket and sit on it while you write. You must finish what you start, even if the piece of writing turns out to have been a flawed idea from the start. You can only learn about the process of writing by taking it all the way from beginning idea to polished work, over and over again.

Sign Up for Newsletter. This was a bad idea. Laurelle didn’t even like old people, not unless they were in excellent health and had good retirement benefits. The smells inside a stranger’s house made her ill. This one probably reeked of kitty litter and overripe bananas. Ldquo;Rhoda’s a little eccentric,” the church secretary had told Laurelle when she called, asking for Rhoda’s phone number and address. “You’ll love her.”. Laurelle was sick of mourning a marriage that had been doomed from the start, sic...

December 9, 2014 · 10:02 pm. Before anyone gets excited, let me say that this is not a post telling how to see a rise in your investments. To me, a “profit” doesn’t have to be money or material gain. If the profit is in one of those areas, it doesn’t have to be a large gain, either, for it to be a profit. OK, with that clarification out-of-the-way, what am I seeing a profit from now? What do I want to see a profit from in the future? For a wannabe writer, that’s PROFIT! 8221; attitude. If I can achie...

Literary Child - The Literary Activity Magazine for Children!

Picture Book Review: I Love You More. I Love You More. Written by Laura Duksta. Illustrated by Karen Keesler. A flip-sided book.like love, it never ends. I recently received a review copy of this children's picture book. It isn't a story, but rather a conversation between a mother and her son. The question initially posed by the little boy is, "Mommy, just how much do you love me? She continues with many other sweet comparisons of love. It creates a wonderful opportunity for him to use his imagination an...

Literary Chronicles – For all things Literary

For all things Literary. BOOK REVIEW- The 5th Columnist: A Legendary Journalist by Liz Gitonga. The good, bad and ugly sides of Philip Ochieng’s life are human. That was my first thought after reading the first few chapters of Liz Gitonga’s biography of Philip Ochieng,. The 5th Columnist: A Legendary Journalist. The journalist who awed me and stimulated my grammar senses in equal measure comes to life in one of the most brutally straightforward biographies I have ever read. Ochieng, says the author, invo...
