After Page One: Encouragement | Literary Mama
http://www.literarymama.com/blog/archives/2015/02/after-page-one-encouragement-2.html
Writing about the many faces of motherhood. After Page One: Encouragement. February 9, 2015. A guest post to motivate, encourage and inspire. Not long ago, I overheard my husband and son discussing my son’s request for a watch. Daddy, he said. I’m getting bigger now. I’m ten years old! I think it’s time I had a watch. Shortly before the watch incident, I had experienced a momentous occasion in my life: my publishing debut. An essay I wrote appeared in a national paper. Who was I to call myself a writer?

Writing about the many faces of motherhood. Sweat pooled at the crook of her arm, her belly, the fronts of her thighs wherever her body touched little Eli’s. His face was flushed and puffy from his nightmare, but he was finally sleeping soundly. His sweaty hair had dried enough that strands of it rose and fell with the fan’s oscillation, although much of it remained matted to his forehead. Once he’s in kindergarten, it’ll all get easier,. Or so the internet reported. No, Eli, no, Eli, no. She crouched on...

Falling to Earth | Literary Mama

Writing about the many faces of motherhood. She spent her time out in the yard from dawn to sunset, stabbing holes in the earth with a spade, mixing buckets of blood and bone, and ignoring my questions about when my father would be coming home. I didn't mind the unanswered question. My father always came back eventually. The question wasn't a question so much as a reminder that it was just the two of us - mother and daughter. A mother wants to protect her daughter from the world. I couldn't even prot...

Tuesday, May 14, 2013. I Facebook-friended the writer Luis Alberto Urrea this morning, whose book The Hummingbird's Daughter. I loved and highly recommend. (I've just put the follow-up, Queen of America. On my wishlist.) The unexpected benefit of friending Urrea? He posts awesome horse art. I owe today's borrowed horse to him. Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." - George Bernard Shaw. Monday, December 13, 2010. Happy Hol. err.Chris.err.Oh, forget it. I received a sales add in my e-mail today offering a dictionary of politically correct terms. I thought, "wow. There is a need for an entire dictionary! Plus it seems that being politically correct is only okay when it works for the one trying to enforce it. Like this whole Holiday vs. Christmas thing. So, I don't feel it's taking Christ out of Chr...
A Conscious Mom: The Truth Always Haunts

Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." - George Bernard Shaw. Saturday, November 20, 2010. The Truth Always Haunts. The Truth always haunts. Someone posted this on Facebook a little while ago, and it has stuck with me ever since. Curious. Such a simple statement, I found it incredibly profound. How the truth always haunts. But why? Okay, you messed up. So have I. A lot. So what? We all make mistakes don't we? Isn't that part of the point? We teach our children that making mi...

http://lonestarmablog.blogspot.com/2015/08/world-breastfeeding-week-help-your.html
Friday, August 07, 2015. World Breastfeeding Week: Help Your Partner Breastfeed. This is an essay of Lone Star Ma's that originally appeared in We The People News. Years and years ago:. When women are polled on reasons why they did not start or why they stopped breastfeeding their babies, one of the reasons that is often mentioned is lack of support from their partners. Breastfeeding in today’s society takes a real commitment, and not just from moms. Later in life, children who were formula-fed have more...

Friday, June 26, 2015. How amazing and fantastic and wonderful is today? The Supreme Court has ruled that states cannot prevent gay people from marrying so now our gay brothers and sisters all over this great country have access to the civil right of marriage! I am proud to be an American today! I want to address some of the crazy objections that various right-wing bigots have posed to this Supreme Court decision:. Have the constitutional right to marry. SCOTUS Upholds Health Care Subsidies. I am filled ...

Sunday, August 30, 2015. Move-In Weekend: Sophomore Girl. This weekend we drove the Girl down to college and moved her in to her new dorm, which is much more like an apartment, really (in my day, all the women on our wing shared a bathroom down the hall and the tiny room I shared with my room-mate had no air conditioning - Bruce! We also did the necessary provisioning at Target and H-E-B, of course. Some of her friends helped her and her room-mate get unpacked - so nice. We are so proud of that Girl.

Marmee's Corner: Two True Stories
http://wwwmarmeescorner.blogspot.com/2011/02/two-true-stories.html
Where life and faith intersect. Sunday, February 13, 2011. This true story, which I heard a long time ago, came to mind this past Wednesday:. Wednesday morning greeted the Greater Kansas City area with two inches of snow - a mere dusting after the blizzard conditions of a week ago, but it made the drive to Bible Study Fellowship. The entire time our teaching leader (JS) felt pulled and pressed, thinking, "Why didn't I just cancel? It was beautiful and just what I needed; probably what we all needed.".

Saturday, March 2, 2013. Herman Melville was a pretty popular author when he first started writing about, like, ships or whatever. He wrote Moby Dick. Is about a whale and not. A penis. You've heard of that one, right? Anyway, he looked like this:. He's surprisingly okay, isn't he? Besides, 19th Century facial hair is super in right now. But there was just something not quite hip enough about him, so. THIS IS HOW YOU SELL BOOKS HERMAN MELVILLE! Would this guy have died forgotten and penniless? The plot i...
