A Literature Navigator for our PostModern World: August 2014

http://litnav.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 31, 2014. A famous painting [at left] by the important British pre-Raphaelite artist Cowper. 1877-1958] depicts Lancelot asleep as four British Isles queens espy him. This scene comes from the many stories of the round table, collected in a volume by Howard Pyle here. In 1905. There are other paintings of the same scene, ie. one by another British painter, Calderon. 1833-1898] from 1908. Be sure to know his famous piece "St. Elizabeth of Hungary's Great Act of Renunciation" (1891). The chi...

A Literature Navigator for our PostModern World: December 2014

http://litnav.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, December 14, 2014. We must feature the arresting, lovely piece " Something Beautiful. By Emily Montgomery in Rattle,. Issue 43, Spring 2014. It has an indelible feeling and image of the far East, of the tropics and the ancient beauty of Asia. It really reminds me of Tagore. The famous Bengali poet. Here's an excerpt, this is a great part:. I wanted to save something beautiful for you. The last three jewels of glistening pomegranate. Balanced in the palm of my hand before I ate them. Two great blo...

A Literature Navigator for our PostModern World: April 2015

http://litnav.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 5, 2015. This piece by Canadian poet Archibald Lampman is a great evocation of the earth, the transience of life, and the endless amount of types of beauty in the natural world. It has a great ghostly feeling to it, with a real sense of danger- not dramatic danger, but the real, supreme danger of death. Of death's inevitability. BALLADE OF SUMMER'S SLEEP. Sweet summer is gone; they have laid her away—. The last sad hours that were touched with her grace—. Let not a sight or a sound erase.

A Literature Navigator for our PostModern World: Jackson

http://litnav.blogspot.com/2015/06/jackson.html

Sunday, June 14, 2015. In the summer, reading winter poetry is a special thing to enjoy. You can really yearn for the ice cold breezes and crackling snow, whereas during the season itself, it's hard to appreciate. American poet and later activist for the Native Americans, Helen Hunt Jackson. 1830-1885] has a great poem on the month of 'January' in this vein [read more here. Frozen pulse and heart of fire,. What loss is theirs who from thy kingdom turn. Dismayed, and think thy snow a sculptured urn. Have ...

A Literature Navigator for our PostModern World: Sunnylyn Thibodeaux

http://litnav.blogspot.com/2014/03/sunnylyn-thibodeaux.html

Sunday, March 30, 2014. This time I'd like to focus on Sunnylyn Thibodeaux [ here. On goodreads, here. For the Auguste Press]. I was reading a chapbook called Night Palace. And her piece "Tallulah" immediately stood out. Was it eerie enough that I should sit down first? She's got an incredible sense of place, and it's very biblical, very beautiful like the book of Revelation. Keeps the candles burning low. In case he needs to return. The moon climbs walls. Scales of darkness, heavy night. LitNav means li...

Sunday, July 5, 2015. One great set of photos to leaf through for fun is the impeccable collection of tea sets master: Clara Bows. The tea sets are really lovely, which is rare to see. I love a good tea, especially at a unique teahouse. Here is her blog. For more pictures. Most err on the side of poor colors, poor design, etc, but these cups are amazing. Here's an example photo of her's, one of my favorites- I really want this green-gold set, and quite a few others:. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

CultureNav: A Guide to our PostModern Culture: December 2014

http://culturenav.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 31, 2014. For people who love M.I.A. but are dying for a new album, I would try first Sleigh Bells [like their song Crown on the Ground. And then some of Kanye West's pieces and the remixes/mashups. In general, mashups are a great source of songs for M.I.A.-style music lovers. Kanye in particular has many songs that naturally approach a type of mashup level in complexity and artistry. His piece Dark Fantasy. Is one, as is Blood on the Leaves. Which is really nice. The photo below show...

CultureNav: A Guide to our PostModern Culture: Songs

http://culturenav.blogspot.com/2015/06/songs.html

Sunday, June 14, 2015. After resisting the band Animal Collective. Based on some reviews, I have to take back what I thought- they have an interesting, chaotic ambient sound. Try ' Visiting Friends. Or ' The Softest Voice. I love the idea of playing them on the sound system while driving cross country on a meandering trip. A lot of ambient music reminds me of the first Silent Hill. Video game. It had a great ambiguous, eerie backdrop of sound/noise. The tv show Hannibal's. If you have a request!

CultureNav: A Guide to our PostModern Culture: Ambient

http://culturenav.blogspot.com/2015/06/ambient.html

Sunday, June 14, 2015. When you're in the mood for ambient/'noise' music, it's hard to find what you're looking for. There are recordings of jungles, bird calls, thunderstorms, rivers, waterfalls, fires crackling, etc, and more man made, white noise type music: the type that seems to have evolved from the noise edges of the Kid A album or Bjork's work. One great piece in the latter category is Of - Aerial Cisterns. They have a more soothing background/mostly instrumental piece in ' The Muons - Little Star.
