Interpreting the past to connect with the future! From the Farm Kitchen. Aren’t you hot in those clothes? August 10, 2015. One of the more common questions for our museum guides wearing period clothing is, Aren’t you hot in those clothes? As August temperatures climb, now is a good time to get some perspective on that question. Than a tank top and shorts for summer, in the Victorian view. Linen drawers, to solve chafing issues. Corset cover of sheer cotton or linen, high necked for street wear, because t...

Interpreting the past to connect with the future! From the Farm Kitchen. Grain Harvest and Threshing Time. July 28, 2015. Tags: 1850 Pioneer Farm. Summer is slipping away and it is time to start harvesting small grains on the farm! Today when we think of important crops in Iowa, we think of corn and soybeans. The fingers catch the grain as it is cut and then deposit it in a pile at the end of the cutting swing. A skilled cradler could harvest 1 -2 acres a day. As farmers put more land into production and...

Beyond The Garden Gate: March 2015
http://beyondthegardengate-beth.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 21, 2015. Spring break in south Texas. What a privilege to head south to visit our daughter, son-in-law, and little grandson over spring break! We went to Kemah and had lunch. We ate at Crazy Alan's Swamp Shack. Our appetizer was fried pickles. Yum! I had catfish, fries, and hush puppies for lunch. It's crawfish season in Texas, and this is my daughter's plate. After lunch we strolled the Kemah boardwalk. There were many gulls in the area. This was our shuttle. Friday, March 6, 2015.
