FilmNut: April 2012

Reviews from a guy who likes movies. Sunday, April 29, 2012. Is terrific … in his portrait of real-life character, Bernie Tiede, a small-town assistant mortician who’s a bit dandified, a determined self-guided PR machine who quickly becomes the town’s darling in his care for the deceased and their families, and especially the darling of all the “little old ladies.”. He joins the local church and becomes a song-leader. He lives humbly and gives away most everything. Set in East Texas, with a wonderful ens...

FilmNut: "Selma"

Reviews from a guy who likes movies. Monday, January 26, 2015. Stunning in all regards. The story, in all of its complexity and sorrow, is told and pulled me in. The story ends triumphantly in Montgomery, with only a tag line at the end of his death. Musically, powerful, with a searing rap song woven in at the end mentioning Ferguson. The cast, superb . A must-see - for an important chapter in the American Story. A FB friend of mine offers the following:. For those who were disappointed in.

FilmNut: December 2010
http://filmnut.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Reviews from a guy who likes movies. Saturday, December 18, 2010. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. A sometimes-delightful blend of schlock, pretentious throw-away phrases that were so “weighty” they frankly seemed comedic, but with some touching moments, as the boy, who made a better dragon, comes to his senses. His transformation seems to be the heart of the film. Yet I often asked, “What’s the point here? 8221; Where is the story? Yet he’s drowned, if you will, in a sort ...

FilmNut: March 2012
http://filmnut.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Reviews from a guy who likes movies. Saturday, March 24, 2012. I enjoyed it and recommend seeing it, if not in your friendly neighborhood theater, then in the comfort of your home a few weeks from now. It's a fine story of loyalty, sacrifice and love in the face of oppression. These values are highlighted throughout most of the film, though at times, the message got a little muddy, though not in any terminal way. Is spared most of the killing. The same for her fellow Tribune ( Josh Hutcherson. I don't th...

August 26, 2012, "David Spoke of Christ". The ancient world had no interest in the resurrection from the dead. Some said, When you’re dead, you’re dead, and that’s that. Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die. The ancient world had no interest in resurrection. But not so the Jews. Jesus answers dismisses ...

April 28, 2013, "What Meets the Eye". Genesis 50.14-26; Mark 9.2-8. They’re scared out of their wits … and who wouldn’t be? But Joseph remembers his faith … and when the truth comes out, Joseph says to his brothers, What you intended for evil, God intended for good. When was Genesis written? Why are we here?

FilmNut: "American Sniper"
http://filmnut.blogspot.com/2015/01/american-sniper.html
Reviews from a guy who likes movies. Saturday, January 31, 2015. American Sniper is an excellent piece of work, a subtle anti-war film if I've ever seen one . "war is hell," and that's made abundantly clear here. I was worried, from some of what I've read, that it glorified war; it doesn't. Kyle had four tours of duty . a profound dislocation for him, for his wife and his children. Where was home? Was it with his family, or with his "family" over there? I thought the "enemy" was decently portrayed - mos...

March 31, 2013, "For Thine Is the Kingdom". Luke 12.35-48; Luke 24.1-12. All around us, again and again. The dark shadows of death and fear. The soul of humankind. Wracked with sorrow and sin. Hatred fills our history books. Our stories, bent and broken. Humankind, created in God’s image. But reap only war.
