Living with shackle draggers

Monday, 1 January 2018. This then, is another 'so that was' kind of entry. So that was 2017. Anyway, Daile wanted a hat. I said I'd get one. Here 'it' is. The wedding was down in NSW, in a field! We took the opportunity to meet my new 'mentor' (James Guppy) who has kindly agreed to take the role as part of the grant stipulations that I was awarded early in 2017. It's a cool thing, and I'm due to exhibit 16 paintings in Jan 2019 off the back of it. Sobelow, the big tree, under which they got married.

Living with shackle draggers: May 2015

http://livingwithshackledraggers.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Friday, 1 May 2015. And then she was gone! I've got a lot of pictures to post, and I'm going to post quite a few. It might be a bit of a trawl for you if you don't know us, but go for your life! The pics are from the phones of Gill, Daile and I. We just took it easy the first couple of days or so, whilst Gill got used to being upside down.:-). Our bit of land. This is the quarry in Daisy Hill forest that we walk to. Tild finds another critter, this time it's a Mantis. Gill's new dog . Ned. Well, I was ju...

Friday, 3 April 2015. Big day this Sunday. Gilly, my sister is coming over from the UK. This will be the first time we've been visited by someone other than my two oldest kids since we moved to Oz 7 years ago! And it's half that time since either of them. Were over too). It's amazing how fast time flies! Expecting them. Post rationalisation they call it.aye. And especially since the Sargent exhibition is currently on there! They would have loved it I'm sure, but how I would have liked to share that too.

Living with shackle draggers: October 2013

http://livingwithshackledraggers.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 30 October 2013. Since the last post, quite a lot of water has gone under the bridge. When Mum died, for quite a long time my Dad would cry when he was talking about her. He missed her terribly. After struggling on bravely for a while, on the 24th of September he passed away at home. At the time of his death, he was recovering from a broken hip, he couldn't see very much, he couldn't breath without regular help from a machine, he had various inflammations and was feeling very lonely. Large sca...

Living with shackle draggers: December 2013

Monday, 30 December 2013. Well, it's been a while.and I've kind of factored this blog out of my 'things to do' list on a weekly basis. I guess it's got something to do with the fact that we're going quite tough at the moment and it's hard to write about that stuff, and that I always had my Mum and Dad in mind when I wrote before, .I dunno. Actually, it's hard to remember what's happened.another good reason to keep up with the entries! We've had two offers on the land, which has been on the market for ove...

Living with shackle draggers: February 2015

http://livingwithshackledraggers.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, 28 February 2015. We're nearly into Autumn here in Brisbane, and the heat is beginning to slacken off a little. Such a lot has been happening, and much of it has not felt particularly blog-able. Probably the most life changing thing that's been affecting the family over the last month has been the ongoing change to our diet and the business of educating ourselves about Veganism and nutritional issues related to such a radical departure from what used to be normal. What it's meant is that I'm do...

Boiling Snow For Water: September 2011

http://boilingsnowforwater.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, 17 September 2011. Gender Roles in YA (That's Young Adult to YOU). One of the most interesting things about university is what it's taught me about gender studies and feminism; both of which are topics I deeply admire. It seems a long time ago that we had our first lecture on feminism and I'm kind of embarrassed to say that when our teacher asked, 'Who here is a feminist? No one put up their hand. Not even me. Didn't they want to eradicate the male gender? Could I, as a man, even be. YA fiction...

Boiling Snow For Water: February 2011

http://boilingsnowforwater.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, 26 February 2011. Writing "Realist" Short Fiction. In our first seminar for Realist Short Fiction. Our teacher advised us to avoid writing anything sci-fi or fantasy. As you'd expect, we nodded in agreement. We all knew we'd signed up for a realist. Short fiction. And then my teacher said something which seemed wise, but I think was wrong. Now don't get me wrong, he wasn't saying it in a sneery, superior way - it was not belittling, and he didn't seem to have anything against. OK, well I'm stuck.

Boiling Snow For Water: June 2011

Monday, 20 June 2011. The Time of the Firebird. Good even, chidlings. So my cousin Rosey and I have started a short story blog, an idea inspired by the Merry Sister's of Fate (See the right hand panels) I'll use Rosey's introduction so you get the idea. We'll be posting the results here at. Also, I like to experiment with other forms and structures in my writing. Plus inspiration is always a tricky thing. Or, we both just use our computers. ;). Boiling Snow For Water: On Censoring in YA

http://boilingsnowforwater.blogspot.com/2012/03/on-censoring-in-ya.html

Sunday, 4 March 2012. On Censoring in YA. I find the trend in YA literature that assumes that teenagers are comfortable with bad language and sexuality disturbing.". I read on a review written by a Goodreads. I want to stand by this wonderful postcard:. BUT I CAN'T. PREPARE FOR CAPITOL LETTERS. I'm resisting the urge to use hundreds of expletives here, so I'll just go ahead and say one of them: FUCK OFF. I'm three years past teenage-dom and I was reading The Black Jewels. And The Lovely Bones. Who are su...

Friday, 30 December 2011. The Heroines List: 2011. A Top Ten for this year. discovered through new books, old books, reinventions and re-readings. 10 Amy, The Passage. I've got a real thing for mysterious creatures - and Amy is certainly that. The Passage. Cronin doesn't tell us, and his hints and snippets that skirt outside these questions are often frustrating - but not once was I left with the feeling that Amy might be a two-dimensional character. 9 Violet Crawley, Downton Abbey. 8 Mirasol, Chalice.

Friday, 18 March 2011. So that story I was whining about a few weeks ago. Anyway, when I finally. Got a good idea that weekend I'd been watching the trailer for happythankyoumoreplease. And it inspired this in some way. I couldn't say how. I just loved it in any case. Ahem I hope you like it. My foot really, really fucking hurts. Why would they have the doctor’s surgery at the top of the fucking building? I grip the railing and take a couple of breaths. If I could just walk. And who’s she. 8217; she asks.
